THE JOURNAL

This December, MR PORTER headed out to Florida (not Switzerland – good job we checked first) for Art Basel Miami. Not to invest in the art, although we did have a gander. Nor on reconnaissance well in advance of GTA6, which might be more our cultural speed, if we’re completely honest. But to take pointers from some of the most stylish attendees. The Miami Beach Convention Center we could just about pull up from the overhead map tattooed in our mind. And what did we find when we got there? Impressively rendered outfits plucked from an open-world setting, worn by men who most certainly weren’t NPCs. There are tips to learn, below, if you’re game.
01. The 1970s are back – again

You can call it a generational cycle. You can call it a masculine equivalent of the hemline index, the theory that skirt lengths shortened in times of economic turmoil. But one thing is for certain – the looks of the 1970s are back. Photographer Mr Tyler Mitchell’s dagger collar, seen here, is Exhibit A (comparisons to Mr Harry Hill are unnecessary, especially given the vivid shade of baby blue), supported by those flared trousers (is there a hint of moleskin?), the oxblood Derby shoes, the brown cardigan and, well, just about everything. Even the geometric lines of the LOEWE Puzzle folding leather tote bag are on point – it’s the bag Mr Giorgetto Giugiaro would have designed, after all.
02. Why now is your moment to shine

A suit with just a hint of shine is an excellent proposition for this time of year. It’s perkier than a day-to-day wool option, but not quite so hoity toity as a full tux. We particularly love how this young sir has dressed his ensemble down by unmatching the jacket and trousers, donning lug sole shoes and wearing a tee (or a tank) beneath his blazer.
03. Put effort into effortlessness

If there was ever an outfit to sum up the most trendsetting items of clothing of the past year, the one worn by this stylish Art Basel attendee would surely be it. From the tank top layered beneath a louche casual shirt, to the endlessly wearable wide-leg, lightly flared white jeans, to the crocheted tote bag, it’s proof that understated, unassuming staples – when styled properly – can really move mountains. Not to mention the clog-shaped footwear (in what looks like Bottega Veneta’s chocolate brown) and stacked chains, which, along with the rest of the look, we’d be glad to carry into next season – and many more to come.
04. Set the tone right

Here is a great example of how to style your fit around one piece. The tie-dye shirt has its main-character moment, with the wearer wearing it with neutral navy pants and some black patent laced shoes. Who said you can’t style navy with black? And he brings just about the perfect level of cohesion for a casual, nonchalant look with his rose-tinted glasses, the exact shade of pink of his shirt. We also love that he has added another layer of colour with his bag – even though it’s a bright shade of royal blue, it doesn’t take away from the shirt (and actually matches the base layer below, just seen at the neckline).
05. How the west was won

The balancing act between nailing the western look and venturing into rootin’-tootin’ dressing-up territory is an art in itself. This attendee, however, has hit the bullseye. He embraces his inner cowboy with the dark denim shirt with press-stud pearl buttons and his black pointed boots that no doubt feature a stacked heel. But he also modernises the outfit with a Miami beach staple: bright white jeans that hug his thigh and sit perfectly on top of his footwear. And while these may not be in-keeping with his ranch dressing, we would be doing this gentleman a disservice if we didn’t also shout out his artful choice in eyewear.
06. Art for art’s sake

In what is a very apt move for the event, this gentleman’s ensemble seems to have been inspired by a painter’s jacket, the utilitarian uniform usually worn by artists. His off-white button-down shirt is definitely artful, thanks to the belt that is unusually placed across the chest. With that eye-catching detail, he has smartly kept the rest of his look simple, opting for relaxed-fit trousers with chunky black boots, and accessorising with stylish dark sunglasses.
07. Are you gonna dress this way?

Sometimes when unpicking a person’s outfit, we like to imagine what their Spotify Wrapped playlist might look like. All we’ve got here is “Are You Gonna Go My Way”-era Mr Lenny Kravitz via Mr Steve Lacy and Mr Elvis Costello, but undoubtedly this hero’s top artists include acts that we’ve not ever heard of – or that don’t even exist yet. Eclectic, certainly, we’d put him down as an alchemist, with unlikely styles sitting surprisingly comfortably together. Anywhere else, his high-waisted floral bootcut trousers would leave everything else in the shade. However, here, the patterned jacket with chunky lapels and jewellery pull the eye up, while the black underlayer provides a sturdy foundation. Ms Taylor Swift must be in there somewhere – she was on everyone’s list.
