Staff Picks: The Knockout Items That Will Make You Say “Yolo”

Words by The MR PORTER Team

9 April 2021

Everyone has one item – OK, a dozen – sitting on their Wish List, that, for one reason or another, they’ve never managed commit to. It’s either too extravagant to buy for yourself, it’s way beyond the borders of your comfort zone or it’s just outside your justifiable price range. But it’s 2021, and we’ve been through the apocalypse and back again. The stress of impending environmental disaster and the solitude/complete inability to find a moment to ourselves over the past year has brought us a fresh perspective. If we don’t pull the purchase trigger now, we never will. It’s time to get that cashmere overcoat you’ve been fawning over, or the statement knit, or that ridiculously priced ornament for your living room. Go ahead and buy it. Treat yourself. You deserve that ridiculous thing. It will be worth it. #noregrets

01. Senior Watch Editor

Mr Chris Hall

I have been somewhat obsessed with the Laurent Ferrier Galet Square since I first saw one in 2015. It has been camped out near the top of my “lottery win shopping list” ever since. There are more expensive watches, of course, and you might expect me to blow the budget on a top-end chronograph or a perpetual calendar. But the Galet Square is a simple, time-only automatic watch. It’s even cased in stainless steel and comes on a casual Alcantara strap. For me, that’s the whole point. Wearing something so unostentatious that I’ll treasure like my first-born is, as they say these days, the ultimate flex.

Ms Roni Omikorede

It’s not difficult for me to find an excuse to treat myself to something fabulous. Yes, I even buy myself birthday and Christmas presents. Did I manage to go three months without ordering McDonald’s on Uber Eats? I deserve a new pair of jeans. There is one purchase, however, that I haven’t been able to justify yet. I’ve got my eye on the Pasha, a 1980s icon that Cartier brought back from the archives – and I’m not even a watch person. There’s just something about the perfectly round case and blue crown. I may or may not be considering doing another degree just so my family can buy it for me as a graduation present. Failing that, I’ll go for it when I reach another milestone. Keeping a Swiss cheese plant alive counts, right?

03. Deputy Editor

Mr Ashley Clarke

Bottega Veneta, now under the creative directorship of Mr Daniel Lee, has been turning out some truly great clothes in recent seasons. This intrecciato tote, complete with squishy handles, might be slightly north of my budget and I might have absolutely nowhere to take it apart from the supermarket, but in terms of a bag for life, I think I’ve found the one.

04. Senior Editor

Ms Lili Göksenin

I will never, ever take travel – even a night away – for granted again. This time last year, I had fantasies of zooming (no, not that kind) around Europe, seeing the sights, tasting the tastes, all while living out of a suitcase I bought when I was at university. Now that the world looks like it’s on the up and up (sort of), I’d very much like to invest in two things: travel and something amazing to travel with, such as this Globe-Trotter carry-on. See you soon, Europe.

05. Editor

Mr Tom M Ford

In some ways I am not fit for purpose. I am the editor of a magazine that sells clothes, but I have never been to fashion week. Or do you say a fashion week? The? I don’t have a selvedge denim collection or a penchant for rare Raf Simons pieces. Even saying the word “pieces” jars with me on a cellular level. So, after a year indoors spent pondering the nature of my existence, I have decided to get out of my comfort zone. Which is why my f***-it, once-in-a-lifetime clothing pick is this pair of chinos. I have never worn such things, but their apparent popularity among enthusiastic wearers makes me duty-bound to try to pull them off. I worry what will become of me, but I am worth it. I deserve this. And, anyway, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

06. Designer

Mr Rae Fernandez

I’ve always wanted a set of home speakers that blend in seamlessly with the rest of my decor. These loudspeakers from Transparent Speaker have been on my Wish List for ages now and I think it’s finally time to buy. Their modular design, compatibility and voice control options are an added plus, but most importantly, they pack that quality sound I need for any occasion. Living room dance party, anyone?
