THE JOURNAL

A 16th-century chateau in the Loire Valley might not seem like the obvious setting for the grand reveal of Mr Hedi Slimane’s latest collection for CELINE HOMME. The elaborate French Renaissance architecture of the Château de Chambord was certainly a departure for the designer, whose inspirations tend to lie in the grit and crackling energy of contemporary youth culture rather than the grandeur of the past. (This is a man who, when he is not designing fashion collections, can often be found photographing teen punk bands in underground music venues.)

But “Teen Knight Poem”, his new collection for the brand, is no LARPing medieval fantasy. While it’s true that certain items in the collection, such as the woollen beanies knitted to look like helmets, do speak explicitly to the historical narrative, Slimane’s skill has always been in translating his inspirations – however fantastical – into clothes that real guys actually want to wear. And that’s absolutely the case here, with enough sharp tailoring, logo-print hoodies and satisfyingly Slimane-y silhouettes to keep even his most ardent acolytes happy.
As you’d expect of CELINE HOMME, there’s a seriously impressive level of finishing, too: think chunky knitwear hand-embellished with crystals, denim jackets trimmed with punky metal studs, and leather blousons with sequinned arms (the latter an exclusive to MR PORTER). Meanwhile, ruffle-collared shirts worn with chain-link necklaces add a 1980s New Romantic twist, suggesting that perhaps Slimane isn’t so far from home after all.
