Seven Lightweight Summer Jackets That Will See You Into Autumn

Words by Fedora Abu

2 August 2023

Not that we like to dwell on it too much, but by our calculations we’re already two thirds of the way through summer. (Or, if you’re based in London like us, summer came and went so swiftly you could barely crack open the first bottle of Aperol.) We say this not to dampen the mood entirely – the British weather’s already done that for us – but to remind you that it’s a fact worth keeping in the back of your mind as you make your next MR PORTER purchase.

Take a lightweight jacket, for example. It may not tap into the summer spirit the same way as a tie-dye printed shirt or brand-new pair of swim shorts (and do continue to snap those up if you’re lucky enough to have a vacation on the cards), but you’ll be thankful you clicked “purchase” when the evening chill descends or the forecast isn’t so inspiring. More importantly, you’ll still get away with wearing it well until the middle of autumn. Not sure which to choose? Not to worry. Here, we’ve picked out seven of our favourites from Stone Island, Acne Studios, Jacquemus and more.

01.

The Stone Island logo overshirt

Too hot out for proper outerwear but too nippy for anything less than two layers? Then what you need is an overshirt. Our pick is this breathable cotton piece by Stone Island, which comes in a delightfully soft, seasonally apt lilac, while offering all the tech-y details (and of course that logo patch) that the brand’s acolytes go nuts for.

02.

The silk AMIRI bomber jacket

For those not familiar with the work of Mr Mike Amiri, it might be best summed up as high-end spins on streetwear staples, with an extra dusting of rock ’n’ roll for good measure. This bomber jacket is a brilliant example – it sticks to the classic blueprint, more or less, and then ramps it up a notch with a jazzy logo print atop a canvas of luxurious silk twill.

03.

The Moncler Genius quilted shell overshirt

Moncler Genius’s latest creative collaborator? Only the man who brought the world some of the most iconic, most irreverent sneakers of the last decade. But turns out Mr Saleh Bembury isn’t just a one-trick pony. Rather, he’s proven his talents extend from footwear to outerwear, and this short-sleeved shell-down overshirt sits top of our Wish List.

04.

The CHERRY LA cowboy-print jacket

The Western look – or “ranch dressing”, as we’ve so cleverly christened it – is once again all the rage in menswear, which makes this cowboy-print canvas jacket by CHERRY LA right on the money. A statement on its own, it’s guaranteed to draw compliments whatever basics you wear alongside it, but for extra marks, we recommend pairing it with the equally punchy matching trousers.

05.

The striped Jacquemus overshirt

Mr Simon Porte Jacquemus’ roots are in the sunny lands of Provence, which is to say the buzzed-about designer knows a thing or two about warm-weather dressing. Still, he’s ever so kind as to cater for us less lucky folk whose summer days currently involve air-conditioned offices and on-and-off rainy commutes (no bitterness, here), as evidenced by this padded cotton-poplin overshirt.

06.

The Loro Piana waffle-knit bomber jacket

Menswear trends may come and go, but the allure of Loro Piana’s plush fabrics and time-honoured craftsmanship is for ever. In short, when you’re putting down some serious cash on an investment piece, you could do much worse than the Italian heritage label. This quiet-luxury linen-and-silk bomber is one such winner.

07.

The Acne Studios cotton-blend overshirt

Ah, purple. It’s the most regal shade on the spectrum, we’re told, and yet so famously tricky to pull off. If you’re game to give it a go, turn to Acne Studios, who has toned down the tongue-in-cheek a tad in favour of this pared-back twill overshirt – all crisp, clean lines that let that the colour do the talking.
