THE JOURNAL

At MR PORTER, we like to think our monthly best-dressed lists showcase the sheer breadth of stylish men out there. Sure, there’s always a fair few actor types – having a stylist on your payroll does up your chances of looking like a million bucks – but we’re also not afraid to cast the net wide. Take this month, for example. We’ve got a bit of Young Hollywood (Mr Justice Smith) and a bit of, er, More Mature Hollywood (Mr Keanu Reeves). We’ve got a best-dressed-list first-timer (pleased to meet you, Mr Vassili Schneider) and we’ve got the return of an old-school MR PORTER favourite (welcome back, Mr Hidetoshi Nakata). Yes, we’ve thrown Mr Evan Mock in there for the 675th consecutive time, but that’s because he’s Evan Mock and always looks great – although we’d hazard you may not recognise him at first, post “vibe shift” (GQ’s words, not ours). The point is, if ever you needed proof that great style has no age or occupation, then the aforementioned guys – plus two more snazzy dressers – are as concrete as it gets.

Mr Keanu Reeves

The Matrix was a long time ago and taking the red pill has come to mean something very different from the transgender allegory the Wachowski sisters originally plotted. Mr Keanu Reeves himself has moved on to the John Wick franchise and been supplanted by Mr Ben Affleck as the internet’s most meme-able man. However, there’s a sense that the actor is still able to download skillsets – certainly when it comes to style. As John Wick, the dog-loving hitman begrudgingly coaxed out of retirement, Reeves is noted for his black suits, but we’ve set our sights on this tonal and textured green ensemble, complete with breeze-tussled hair. And we’d wager the brown suede boots have seen as much action as the cold stare. In a word: “Woah!”

Mr Vassili Schneider

Model-slash-actor Mr Vassili Schneider is something of a fixture on the Lanvin front row, so it was no great surprise to see him at the brand’s AW23 fashion show in Paris this month. Dressed head to toe in Lanvin’s spring collection and sporting his signature tousled hair, his look was more runway than real life – what do you expect from Paris Fashion Week? – but there are still lessons for the average man on the street to take away, such as the power of a subtle print and a pleated pant.

Mr Donald Glover

Mr Donald Glover sits at the forefront of a small cadre of Hollywood men whose style is best described as “weird, but it works”. This coordinating set from Zegna is classic in shape (the high-waisted trousers and concealed-button shirt wouldn’t look out of place on Mr Gene Kelly), but the lemon-yellow hue jolts the look firmly into modern territory. On Instagram, Glover’s stylist wavered between the cream loafers he wears here and a pair of almond-toed black shoes – a familiar quandary for anyone trying to decide what to wear with light-coloured clothing. For what it’s worth, we’d say she chose correctly: the paler shade creates a much more fluid line.

Mr Evan Mock

Before stepping out in FERRAGAMO at Vanity Fair’s Oscars affair, Evan Mock pulled off another red-carpet winner earlier that evening at Sir Elton John’s do. And, yes, that really is Evan Mock you’re looking at. Rather unexpectedly, the it-boy actor has shed his signature pink buzzcuts and out-there outfits and entered his Tailoring Era. On paper it might sound like a dull downgrade, but a quick glance at the crisp combo above proves that, with a sprinkling of jewellery and an unorthodox shoe pick, you can infuse more buttoned-up pieces with oodles of personality. With fashion’s favourite Gen Z-er now officially on board the tux train, is it too early to sound the klaxon and declare suiting the new streetwear?

Mr Justice Smith

The Dungeons & Dragons star attended the film’s New York premiere wearing the cosiest BODE wool patchwork set (ahem, the jacket is available at MR PORTER) with an autumnal palette for spring – now this is ground-breaking. To sustain the casual feel, he opted for a simple white shirt – top buttons opened, of course – and beige Dr. Martens that perfectly match the jacket’s lapels.

Mr Jamie Dornan

Menswear may be in the middle of a vibe shift, moving away from slouchy street style towards smart, tailored looks, but we might not be fully ready to let go yet, as Mr Jamie Dornan shows. The Irish actor was front row at the LOEWE show during Paris Fashion Week, dressed in what can only described as “street-smart” – a relaxed “greige” sweatshirt over a pair of shiny trousers with the sharpest creases we’ve seen this side of Savile Row. We did recently note that new-season collections “were rooted in clothes to shine in, rather than to lounge around in” but we’ll follow Dornan’s lead here and ask, “why not both?”

Mr Hidetoshi Nakata

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what former football star Mr Hidetoshi Nakata has been up to since retiring at 29, you’ve come to the right place. Aside from immersing himself in the history of his country and establishing Japan Craft Sake Company, a production, logistics and events agency aimed at preserving one of Japan’s longest standing crafts – sake brewery – the now 46-year-old has been serving looks the world over. The reason why we love the one he donned at Louis Vuitton’s latest show? Nothing screams “low-key celebrity” quite like an all-black, uber-luxe outfit that’s been (disguisedly) studied down to the last detail – from the coordinated shades to the perfect baggy jeans.
