THE JOURNAL

We’ve made it. Today is payday (for many) and next week officially marks the beginning of May, meaning holidays are on the horizon, T-shirt weather is upon us and we can really start to disrobe – within reason – for the warmer months ahead. To celebrate, here at MR PORTER, we’ve been on the hunt for the perfect T-shirt and suspect we’ve found it in Tokyo-based brand Blue Blue Japan’s, which features an ombre red circle in homage to the national Hinomaru flag and symbolises a rising sun. Nail the vintage workwear look by styling it with slouchy cargo trousers. And add Folk’s boxy, black denim jacket if there’s still a chill in the air.
For a stylish yet smart spring look, LOEWE has you covered. The Spanish brand’s cult annual collaboration with Paula’s Ibiza is back and bringing with it a sleek, striped polo shirt in burgundy and light blue, which makes for an unexpected and unique colour combination. While this style of shirt has something of a rugby look going on, this particular version should be kept well clear of muddy pitches (not least because it’s dry clean only) and reserved for spectating at a safe distance from the stands. Or, better still, from a comfy seat at your local beer garden.
To lean into the preppy feel, pair it with beige cotton-linen Bermuda shorts and leather boat shoes by Sebago, a new brand on the MR PORTER roster. Whatever you do though, don’t pop the collar – it’s a bit too on the nose of the athletic aesthetic, plus you’ll really want to show off the anagram logo on the back, a discreet nod to understated luxury.
If you haven’t already found a pair of sunglasses, we’ve got an entire guide to help you find the perfect pair. If you’re in a hurry, though, we highly recommend going for Jacques Marie Mage’s square-frame Torino style from our Consciously Crafted edit. The brand’s limited-edition handcrafted sunnies blend both traditional and innovative techniques. This pair comes with classic Vintage Green lenses, which are finished with an anti-reflected treatment providing heightened protection against glare.
If you’re soon to embark on your summer holidays, then lucky you. Our advice is to pack smart with versatile pieces that will elevate your vacation wardrobe. Los Angeles-based brand Gallery Dept.’s red cotton-jersey shorts are great for lounging – OK, posing – poolside or wearing on a jog along the promenade.
If you’re thinking city break instead, you’ll want some sophisticated accessories to smarten up your sight-seeing outfit – Jil Sanders’ leather Knot bag will serve you well in the airport, too, as you can stash your passport and AirPods inside, along with your phone, wallet and everything else.
Finally, if a fancy dinner is on the itinerary, you’ll want to stack one of Spinelli Kilcollin’s iconic interlinked rings on your index finger. Handmade in Downtown LA, this version comes in sterling silver with striking blackened diamonds that will make any look that bit slicker.
