Sartorially speaking, summer is known as a time of lighthearted experimentation. But while adding jazzy shirts, sandals and tank tops to your rotation may be a pretty easy task, switching up your accessories can take some trial and error. The latest designer collections provide plenty of inspiration when it comes to sunglasses, hats and bags… However, jewellery still remains something of a style dilemma. But no longer. To provide some handy inspiration, we’ve turned our eyes to the confident dressers – on and off the red carpet – who wore jewellery well in recent months. From Mr Paul Mescal’s understated yet ever so popular chain to statement rings and large-cut colourful gemstones, this summer is your (and your jewellery’s) time to shine.
01. The enduring appeal of the cuff

Cuffs are some of the most overlooked and underrated pieces of jewellery. And, if you’re relatively new to men’s bling, it’s also one of the best places to start wearing it. First rising to widespread popularity with Cartier’s Love collection, it’s now a key design for many brands, from Fernando Jorge and Jacques Marie Mage to Messika and Buccellati. If you’re teaming it with a timepiece or other pieces of jewellery, we’d recommend choosing something low-key and understated, or consider one with stones or more intricate details if you’re wearing it solo.

02. A watch for every occasion

A watch is an essential component of a man style repertoire. And besides, we couldn’t help but include Mr Jeff Goldblum’s Met Gala appearance in our edit. This impeccably chosen timepiece – a Tiffany & Co.’s Cocktail 2-Hand watch with a round bezel set with glistening diamonds and a satin strap that’s almost just as lustrous – proves that all you need for a lasting impression is the right watch. If you’re wearing a suit, for instance, you’ll probably opt for a dress watch, which should make a statement without ever being too loud or showy. On holiday, think ahead and pack a versatile style that’ll work well with your jewellery (and with extra functions, if you’re the sporty type).

03. The revival of the brooch

In our collective imagination, it’s not long since the brooch has become part of the men’s style conversation. You, too, saw it everywhere at the Oscars last year, or at this year’s Met Gala. But the now-decorative ornament has far more functional origins – from the Bronze Age onwards, brooches were used as clothes fasteners and important markers of social status for men and women. Now they pop up on every red carpet in many shapes and forms, with brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Wales Bonner offering up their jewelled and beaded iterations on the runway. But how to do it right? Mr Vincent Cassel makes it look easy, opting for a shimmering, flower-inspired number that really stands out against the tonal suit. Goldblum went for a combination of three instead, all set with precious stones. How’s that for status?

04. The bigger the better

If your style sits on the more adventurous side of things, why not try something new this summer? Enter the world of big rings – the kind of stuff that you’d notice before any other part of an outfit, or that certainly makes for a brilliant conversation starter. A$AP Rocky docet on this front – take note and go all out with embellished signets, elaborated cameo rings or cocktails styles set with precious stones. More is more when it comes to styling, so wear multiple styles at once for the full effect.

05. A riot of colour

Summer is the best time to experiment with your style and liven up your wardrobe with colours you wouldn’t usually wear. But that approach doesn’t need to be limited to your actual wardrobe – it can, and should, extend to your jewellery collection, too. Simple jewellery may be easier to incorporate into your outfits, but some eye-catching sparkle is really what’s going to take your get-ups to the next level. Think a single earring, a ring or even a couple of pendant chains adjusted to different lengths. Even better if you manage to colour-coordinate the three, in true Mr Pharrell Williams fashion.

06. As simple as it gets

Don’t say we didn’t leave the best until last. The silver chain worn by Paul Mescal’s on-screen character, Connell, in coming-of-age miniseries Normal People may have come to prominence a few years ago now – and it even had its own, albeit unofficial, Instagram account. But it’s safe to say its appeal hasn’t worn off since. A slim, understated chain can pack up a stylish punch with pretty much anything: Mr Austin Butler is an advocate of wearing a silver one with a suit, while Mr Jeremy Allen White often warms up white T-shirts with a slightly longer, gold style. Consider stacking up different styles over simpler tops, such as plain shirts or tank tops, and don’t be afraid of mixing metals.
