We get to the nitty-gritty of how often you should exfoliate – and what with.
We felt that this Style Questions series, where we ask our followers to submit queries to on social media and provide an answer each week, could be seen as a bit exclusive. Not exclusive to particular people, of course. Come one, come all. No, we realised it was exclusive to, well, clothes. And, given that MR PORTER offers a comprehensive selection of grooming products, we thought we should cater for these needs, too, and try to unpack the world of moisturising, shaving and general fine-tuning. So, we asked you for your grooming queries, and grooming queries you certainly had. Plenty of them. First up today: the gritty world of facial scrubs…

The answer to this depends very much on you, _jbcabig. Grooming is a very personal thing. By that, we don’t mean something done in the privacy of your bathroom. (Although we very much advise that this be the case.) We are referring to the fact that no two faces or skin types were made the same, so you must do what is right for you.
Having said that, there are things that we can say with some certainty. A good scrub will gently lift a layer of skin off your face – removing dead and dulling skin cells, speeding up your skin’s natural process, and make you look younger and fresher. Exfoliating will also help soften hairs, and lift them away from your face when you are preparing to shave, helping to prevent ingrown hairs in the process. These are all good things. But facial scrubs, if used improperly, can be irritating to your skin. This is not a good thing. So, consider the below.
If you have sensitive skin, we would advise that you use a facial scrub no more than once a week. And do so with care. You might consider using this product by Sisley – Paris, which, helpfully, has the word “Gentle” in its name – meaning it will be a lot less coarse than other products available to you.
However, perhaps you are made of hardier stuff. Perhaps you trawl fish for a living and spend your days having your skin thickened by harsh, salt-laced wind. You might also have particularly oily skin. In that case, you need something in your grooming arsenal with a bit more firepower – like this facial scrub by Baxter of California. You might even choose to use this twice a week. But, remember – always listen to what your skin is saying. If it becomes angry or red, that’s your signal to leave it be, or go for something a little kinder on your face.
Which brings us to this product, by Malin + Goetz, which, we would suggest, is appropriate for “normal” skin – skin that is neither too sensitive, nor overly oily.
Still unsure? Try a few things and see how they feel. But don’t, whatever you do, exfoliate every day. That’s a recipe for permanent redness.
Try these
