What To Wear To A Winter Wedding

Words by Ashley Ogawa Clarke

A winter wedding has a distinct charm: crisp air, maybe a hint of frost. Snow if you’re lucky. Even better, it’s a chance to really start dressing. Unlike linen-dominated summer nuptials, a winter wedding comes with more options in terms of texture, tone and fabric, plus, plenty of layering to experiment with. Whether you’re attending a cosy pub reception, dressing to the nines for a black-tie soirée or escaping somewhere sunnier entirely, consider this your sartorial cheat sheet. Below, we’ve mapped out outfits for each type of winter wedding, ensuring you’re as well-prepared as the best man’s speech, if unlikely to elicit laughs from the crowd.

01. The casual pub function

A pub or bar reception is trickier to dress for than you might imagine – a three-piece suit will likely be out of place, but go too casual and you run the risk of appearing to have wandered in off the street to take advantage of the free bar. To keep things safe but stylish, opt for a double-breasted jacket, such as this classic wool-twill number from Mr P., with a matching pair of trousers. Sophisticated without being starchy, the jacket can be worn open over a fine-knit sweater if you prefer to dress it down as the day goes on. For footwear, Oxford or Derby shoes will do fine, but these monk-strap shoes from George Cleverley are even better. Made in England, they’ll look particularly great when jiving across the dance floor when “Don’t Stop Believin’” comes on.

02. The black-tie event

If the newlyweds you’re celebrating send an invitation specifying black tie, then good news, most of the sartorial decision making has already been done for you. The goal here is to keep it classic while paying fastidious attention to the finer details. Brunello Cucinelli’s tuxedo jackets are invariably immaculate. This one is made from grain de poudre – a fine, silky wool generally used on high-end tailoring – and comes with satin shawl lapels (details!). Keep everything else classic with a white tuxedo shirt – fancier-looking than your standard button up, this one from Mr P. has an embroidered bib and mother-of-pearl buttons (ahem, details!). And don’t forget the most important part: this sleek black bow tie from Gucci, made from silk crepe de chine, has the Italian house’s tiny gold initials embellished on the corner of the bow (all together now: details!).

03. The city hall ceremony

Urban nuptials tend to be stylishly low-key, which is a good excuse to invest in a suit that is versatile, ie, can be worn long after the wedding is over. A double-breasted suit, such as this pebble-grey one from Canali, will look the part whether layered over a T-shirt, turtleneck or a crisp white dress shirt. If you’re going for the latter, liven everything up with a patterned tie, such as this tastefully dotty number from TOM FORD. For footwear, a polished pair of Derbies will do nicely. This pair from Brunello Cucinelli complement the grey of the suit and the tie perfectly, taking you from the vows to the after-party cocktails without a hitch.

04. The countryside service

A ceremony in a bucolic setting is an opportunity to wear items that blend in with the landscape. Swap the blacks, greys and navies for earthy hues – forest greens, browns, burgundy – and fabrics that have more visual texture. Hunting tweeds might be pushing it here, but corduroy is a safer bet. Far from being teachery, this brown cord suit from Rubinacci will look right at home in the country. Instead of a shirt, amp up the autumnal vibe by layering it over this tactile cream polo neck from Loro Piana. Footwear should be practical, but polished – opt for a pair of lace-up boots or sturdy Derbies in case you end up on any grassy terrain. This signet ring by David Yurman is 18 karat gold and set with a tiger’s eye. It’s also the perfect finishing touch.

05. The destination wedding

If you’re fortunate enough to be invited to a warmer climate to celebrate love this winter, then do crack out that linen suit with verve. A lightweight two-piece in a soft shade – think stony beige, such as this one from Mr P. – should keep you cool while still looking ceremony-appropriate. Add a breezy cotton or silk-blend shirt underneath, sans tie for a more relaxed vibe. And, provided there’s not too much sand and sea involved, finish everything off with these comfortable slip-ons from Brunello Cucinelli. Last but not least, the shades. These D-frame sunglasses from Oliver Peoples are suitably glamorous – and they should help hide the hangover the next morning, too.
