What To Wear To A Spring Wedding

Style tips for the upcoming wedding season.

Call us optimistic, but there have been at least four glimmers of sunlight in the past few weeks here in the UK, so we’re just going to throw caution to the wind and start talking as if it’s spring already. Our thinking is particularly pertinent if you’ve been on the receiving end of a well-in-advance invitation to nuptials of some sort this March, April or May. And that’s because a good wedding outfit doesn’t just fall together, accidentally, by itself. On the contrary, it needs planning, co-ordination and, if you don’t want to be completely lost in a sea of identically clad navy and grey relatives, a healthy dollop of style. Scroll down for our recommendations on how to steal the happy couple’s thunder.

THE SUIT

Navy, grey and black are nice and all, but you’re probably going to have to wear one of those colours when you get married yourself, so why not use your licence as a guest and go for something a little more interesting this time around? This pleasantly sand-coloured example from Boglioli not only looks resplendently airy and spring-y, but feels it, too, thanks to the jacket’s breathable cotton-linen slub fabric and unlined, lightly structured construction.

THE SHIRT

Wearing a proper dress shirt at a wedding, particularly if you’re going slightly off-piste with your suit (see above), will help you retain a level of smartness and formality that’s appropriate to the event. And few dress shirts come more “proper” than this Swiss-made example from Tom Ford, which is rendered in particularly fine cotton poplin and comes with glistening mother-of-pearl buttons and removable stays to help the collar stay ultra sharp. Another nice touch to make your suit that little bit dressier is to add a pocket square, either folded carefully or stuffed with wild abandon as the Italians do. This classic monochrome example from Dolce & Gabbana will go with any colour, and so is eminently reusable, even if your spring features four or five weddings (in which case, lucky you).

THE ACCESSORIES

On a formal occasion such as a wedding, it’s all the extras that will make a difference to your outfit in terms of character and personality. Beyond that, it’s a great excuse to wear a wonderful watch, such as this Swiss-made example in 18-carat rose gold from Zenith, a brand that has been refining its excellent products since 1865. You’ll find this colour particularly harmonious with your tan-coloured suit, especially if you continue along the beige-brown spectrum with your footwear. In this department, we recommend these slightly weathered monk-strap shoes from Officine Creative, which will not only look smart and shiny, but give the impression that such wonderful outfits are an everyday occurrence for you.
