The Boots That Will See You Through Winter

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Not because of the holiday shopping frenzy. And not because of the dinner parties, or the nights spent hibernating with mulled wine and a movie. Not even because of the approaching ski season. Sartorially, more is finally more – and the colder weather gives us the excuse to wrap ourselves up in the warmest of layers and eventually whip out our favourite winter boots.

But how should one pick the perfect pair, the perfect combination of elegance, ruggedness and comfort? From Diemme’s designs, inspired by classic hiking styles, to boots made for leisurely strolls from the likes of SAINT LAURENT, Mr P. and more, you’re sure to find something that tickles your fancy – just read on.

01. The lace-ups

Lace-up boots come in all sorts of guises, from the ones inspired by the early wilderness guides of New England, such as Yuketen’s, to George Cleverley’s smart suede designs and John Lobb’s reimagined military styles. All intended to provide superior cushioning and have shock-absorption qualities – be it for the Vibram soles of the former pairs or the Goodyear-welted rubber soles of the latter – they’re ideal companions for countryside walks and workweek commute alike.

02. The Chelsea boots

If you’re looking for something that’ll stand the test of time and never go out of style, you can’t go wrong with a pair of Chelsea boots. You’ll find yourself turning to them for smart and more casual settings, and pairing them with jeans, chinos and tailored trousers alike. Need some inspiration? Consider SAINT LAURENT’s signature Wyatt pair, which is updated in various materials and colourways each season, R.M.Williams’ rugged camel-hued pair or Manolo Blahnik’s everyday Brompton styles, which are set on rubber-lugged soles for extra grip.

03. The hiking-inspired styles

Originally intended to see you through your best outdoor adventures, these three pairs will look just as good on the busy city streets. They’re all considered down to the last details to withstand the elements. Moncler’s Peka Trek hiking boots, for instance, are set on Vibram rubber soles and made from water-repellent nubuck, while this Brunello Cucinelli pair has protective rubber inserts and thick lugged outsoles. And tread lightly with Diemme’s Roccia Vet model, which is made locally in adherence to MR PORTER’s Craftsmanship Code.

04. The desert boots

If you’ve scrolled all the way down to this edit, chances are you’re looking for something comfortable and versatile that doesn’t compromise on style. Enter the world of desert and chukka boots – those boots that you can comfortably wear year-round and that will work well with most of your existing wardrobe. From Officine Creative’s Hopkins pair to the meticulously crafted Robert style by TOM FORD and visvim’s panelled design – stitched by hand from swatches of suede and leather – you’re spoilt for choice on MR PORTER’s virtual shelves.

05. The Western styles

A pair of cowboy boots might just be the easiest thing to incorporate the Americana trend into your everyday wardrobe. Opt for something casual, like Mr P.’s Olie boots, or go for a more adventurous pair, such as the CELINE HOMME Moon design, which has stacked heels and is embroidered with Western-inspired stitching. Our Legacy’s all-black styles sit somewhere in-between – they’re left relatively simple in the rounded-toe design, but made from tactile waxed-suede that nods to traditional ranch style.
