To mark the vaunted Italian brand’s debut on MR PORTER, we pick out the modern style icons who wear it best.

It-kids, critical darlings and Hollywood talent so fresh that they’ve barely even appeared in a movie yet: when it comes to getting the right people into your clothes, Prada has serious pedigree. Over the past few seasons, this illustrious Italian brand has attracted a roll call of the coolest, most photogenic actors around: Messrs Christoph Waltz, Gary Oldman and James McAvoy are among the names to have recently starred in print campaigns or appeared in runway shows or at promotional events.

To coincide with the long-awaited arrival of Prada on MR PORTER, we’ve taken a look back at some of the brand’s most stylish ambassadors of the past two years.

As the son of Mr Arthur Elgort, one of the most respected fashion photographers of the past 50 years, you’d expect Mr Ansel Elgort to know how to dress; after all, he grew up around fashion shoots and famous faces. And while his cinematic endeavours aren’t exactly tailored towards the MR PORTER audience – as the star of the Divergent series and with lead roles in movies such as The Fault In Our Stars, he’s carved out a niche as one of the most bankable teen movie actors of his generation – when it comes style, this 22-year-old New Yorker is a man very much after our own hearts. Take this sharp teal suit and light brown knit and two-tone loafers that he wore to a Prada dinner at Milan Fashion Week this June: a timeless ensemble, that’d look just as good on his dad as it did on him.

Hacksaw Ridge sees Mr Andrew Garfield slip out of his Spider-Man suit to play Private Desmond T Doss, a US Army medic and Seventh-day Adventist who was awarded the Medal of Honor despite refusing to carry a gun on religious grounds. “Real superheroes don’t wear any spandex,” said the director, Mr Mel Gibson, at the Venice Film Festival, where the movie premiered last Sunday. No: they wear Prada. Taking to the red carpet in a slim-cut tuxedo and skinny tie that perfectly suited his slender frame, Mr Garfield looked worthy of a medal himself.

When he’s not portraying dark, complex characters such as Mr Lucien Carr in 2013’s Mr Alan Ginsberg biopic Kill Your Darlings, the Dorian Gray-esque Mr Dane DeHaan – who’s 30, believe it or not – does the occasional bit of modelling on the side, most notably appearing in Prada’s SS14 campaign. Not content to merely rep the brand on billboards and in the pages of glossy magazines, he also extended his ambassadorial duties to the press tour of his 2015 Mr James Dean biopic, Life. If a dark grey suit, beige shirt and striped collegiate tie sounds like an off-kilter combination to you, that’s probably because it is; but then, neither Prada nor Mr DeHaan are known for playing to type.

This “getting dressed up for the red carpet” game must be getting awfully old hat for Mr Eddie Redmayne, who has rarely been out of the spotlight since his breakout, Oscar-winning performance as the ALS-stricken mathematician Mr Stephen Hawking in 2014’s The Theory of Everything. Attending Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas this April for CinemaCon (not to be confused with San Diego’s Comic-Con, where the best-dressed men are the ones in full cosplay), the actor and current face of Prada’s AW16 campaign chose to play down the glitz and glamour of his surroundings with a neat, understated outfit made up of a speckled blue marl sweater, pale blue Oxford shirt and navy trousers. Cool, collegiate style from the Cambridge grad.

According to online review aggregator Metacritic, 2014’s Boyhood is the best-reviewed movie of all time, boasting an average score of 100 out of 100. MR PORTER is not in the business of passing judgement on movies, but we can say with confidence that the suit worn by Mr Ethan Hawke to a screening of the movie in January of last year is deserving of a similarly high score. Everything about this outfit is just-so, from the crisp lapels and shirt collar to the break of the trouser and the way that it flows into a pair of sleek, well-polished Chelsea boots.

Mr Jason Schwartzman, star of the bawdy comedy The Overnight, appears to be doing his utmost to look slightly mad in this photograph: his bushy facial hair, glass-eyed stare and inward-turning feet give him the impression of the sort of man you might expect to see standing at the bottom of your garden in the dead of night, rather than on the red carpet at a movie premiere. Witness, gentlemen, the transformative power of a Prada suit. Paired with chestnut-brown Chelsea boots, a smart silk tie and a shirt of the palest blue, it acts as the perfect foil to Mr Schwartzman’s kooky eccentricity.

He was hailed as “the French Al Pacino” for his compelling performance as a young, ambitious criminal in 2009’s A Prophet, and while critics were no doubt hoping to draw comparisons between his character and that of Tony Montana of Scarface, we can’t help but see in Mr Tahar Rahim a little bit of Michael Corleone, circa The Godfather Part II: sleeker, less cartoonish, and in possession of a far superior selection of suits. Seen here at the November 2015 premiere of Les Anarchistes, the 35-year-old French-Algerian actor showed that when it comes to style, it’s best to keep things simple: just a navy suit worn over a fine-knit, pale blue sweater (and, naturally, a pair of Chelsea boots) was all that he needed to channel leading-man élan.

MR PORTER first met Mr Paul Dano at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival when he dropped into Soho House in between press appointments for Love & Mercy, the Mr Brian Wilson biopic he was starring in at the time. “I’ve been given a beautiful suit to wear to the premiere,” he told us. “When else will I get the opportunity to dress like this?” If the picture above is anything to go by, then “in about a year” would have been a good answer. Back at TIFF in 2015 to promote Youth, he cut an appropriately youthful figure in a suit of the subtlest grey check, and, like his Prada-wearing compatriot and fellow On-The-Towner Mr Jason Schwartzman, a pale blue shirt and a pair of sleek Chelsea boots.
