From brunch to afternoon tea, five ways to treat your mum this year.
While many rightly feel that mothers should be celebrated throughout the year rather than on designated calendar days, the concept of Mother’s Day at least offers up the chance to really go to town and show your appreciation through a grand gesture. Or at least that’s what London’s leading restaurateurs will have you believe, with a throng of maternally inspired menus cropping up across the city this March. As this year’s Mother’s Day draws near (31 March, if it isn’t already in the diary), we’ve sifted through the rose-scented clichés to suggest five ways to toast your own in style.
The brunch

Wild By Tart
Due to launch their restaurant, Wild By Tart, at Eccleston Yards in Victoria this June, Mses Lucy Carr-Ellison and Jemima Jones are bringing in a star collaborator for a special Mother’s Day brunch in the meantime. Chef Ms Asma Khan – founder of Darjeeling Express and the first Briton to star on Netflix’s stunning Chef’s Table series – has created a one-off menu of traditional Indian dishes, including baked eggs with okra, aubergine and coriander chutney and fresh coconut sambol, which will be served on long family-style dining, with Wild By Tart’s chocolate truffles bagged up as a take-home treat for guests.
The craft lunch

If your mother has a creative side, sign her up for one of the special events at Marylebone’s creative hub and kitchen Carousel this month. For Mother’s Day, lettering designer Ms Alice Gabb will host a calligraphy masterclass, where guests will be immersed in everything from basic nib knowledge to scribing their own name. Stick around for lunch, too, with head chef Mr Ollie Templeton’s seasonal dishes – including baked celeriac and roast onion agnolotti – a worthy way to toast your newfound skills.
The afternoon tea

Sketch
A central London go-to for special occasions, Sketch is hosting a traditional afternoon tea over the final weekend of the month to pay tribute to the capital’s mothers. With its pink palette and walls adorned with more than 200 witty artworks by Mr David Shrigley – who has also put his irreverent stamp on the crockery – the restaurant’s brasserie room is a characterful spot to celebrate Mother’s Day, with Sketch’s signature offering of three tiers of cakes, scones and sandwiches, served with champagne.

After a series of pop-ups and a much-hyped first site in Shoreditch, Mexican restaurant Santo Remedio has since settled in Bermondsey and London is all the better for it. The team’s regional take on Mexican cooking gets a further dose of authenticity this Mother’s Day with Mexican founders Mr Edson and Ms Natalie Diaz-Fuentes handing over control of the kitchen to their own mothers for the day, with one even making the journey from Mexico for the occasion. Expect time-honoured dishes including lamb barbacoa on banana leaves, sautéed calamari and a rich mole verde on the menu against a backdrop of live music.

The Zetter Townhouse
Boasting some of London’s most original hotel interiors, The Zetter Townhouse – with two locations in Clerkenwell and Marylebone – has lined up a special Mother’s Day knees-up for those looking to extend the celebrations over the weekend. Treat your mother to an afternoon tea and an overnight stay amid the hotel’s weird but wonderful blend of Victoriana and taxidermy. Choose between two afternoon teas featuring tea-infused cocktails, before relaxing in the hotel’s antique-filled suites.
