That men are very attached to their hair is evidenced best by those who are losing it – specifically, the sometimes quizzical things they’ll do to keep it. Take, for example, Mr Donald Trump, the 73-year-old POTUS, who insists on parading around with a patchily thatched combover connotative of roadkill. Or Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, who seemingly guards those few lingering wisps up top as if they were the, er, crown jewels.
We get it. Hair is important, and there’s no shame in losing it. But once nature has started to take its course, it pays to work around it rather than directly against it. How exactly, you ask? Firstly, by cutting your hair short to a style that makes the most of your thinning locks. And secondly, by arming yourself with the hair-saving products that promise to enhance rather than enervate your barnet. From a serum that aims to reduce the rate at which your hair thins, to shampoos that boost its volume, these are our recommendations for thinning hair.

The growth serum
While there are just two clinically proven methods of slowing or stopping hair loss currently available on the market (finasteride and minoxidil), a new class of contenders also promises to stem the thinning tide. This serum, backed by the scientific nous of Renessence founder Dr Gregory Bays Brown, uses a proprietary formula to stimulate growth in dormant follicles. This, the good doctor claims, not only prevents the loss of hair, but also helps regrow it. The secret ingredient? Mirroirté™, a bioengineered peptide that gives follicles a kickstart at the stem cell level.

The silky shampoo
Keeping hair clean is key to ensuring it looks its best. Fail to do so, and sebum – the oily substance your skin naturally secretes – can build up to not only make hair look greasy, but cause it to clump together, making thin hair appear even thinner. The solution? Wash your hair at least every two days, preferably with a shampoo such as this one from Stockholm-based salon brand Sachajuan. Enriched with “Ocean Silk Technology”, it leverages the nourishing properties of sea algae extracts to leave your hair looking shinier, healthier and thicker.

The thickening paste
Clay might seem like the kind of thing best left in your backyard rather than bottled in your bathroom cabinet – but Mr Christophe Robin begs to differ. The Parisian hairstylist has unearthed some of the soily substance’s surprising hair benefits. Enhanced with rhassoul clay, Mr Robin’s thickening shampoo works in two ways: it strengthens hair with minerals such as iron, magnesium and zinc, and it absorbs water, helping to boost your hair’s volume without weighing it down.

The hydrating conditioner
When caring for any kind of hair, conditioner is crucial. It smoothes, strengthens and moisturises hair, enhancing shine, reducing frizz and generally leaving it looking healthier. Arguably more crucial, though, is knowing how to use it. Like sebum and styling products, excess conditioner can leave hair lank and greasy, so never use more than a pea-sized amount, taking care to apply to the ends of your hair only, never the roots. Our pick? This deeply moisturising option from Patricks, pleasantly scented with vetiver and black lily, contains the brand’s trademark Patricks Recovery Compound (PRC) which is formulated to prevent hair loss and stimulate growth by improving scalp health.

The salt spray
If your hair is thinning, it makes sense to swerve quiffs, pompadours and other sculptural styles that require ample growth. But that’s not to say you shouldn’t style your hair at all. This sea-salt spray, from US brand Blind Barber, is the perfect light-touch product for men who find their mane regrettably on the wane. Boasting a protein-rich formula and subtle vanilla scent, just a few sprays and some gentle tousling leaves hair looking voluminous and richly textured.
