THE JOURNAL

We’ve spent a good part of the past four months thinking of accessories as decorative, final touches to our outfits, often favouring form over function. But there’s some sort of unspoken rule – or, rather, a specific time of the year – when you wouldn’t leave the house without them. We’re talking about snug headwear, fuzzy scarves, fleece-lined gloves and cosy socks. Not ready to tackle the cold head-on quite yet? Understandable. We’ve done the groundwork and selected a bunch of practical, neutral and easy-to-style winter warmers for your perusal. They may even give you a helping hand in the quest for the perfect gift. You decide…
01. The hats
Baseball cap, beanie or flat cap? Your choice of hat – and hat of choice – will largely depend on two factors: the degree of formality, or the lack thereof, of your everyday style and, naturally, the kind of weather you’re gearing up for. Baseball caps will suit sporty pursuits and off-duty errands, while flat caps lend themselves to smarter occasions. A beanie, however, is a must-have once the nights start drawing in. Pieces known for their workwear connotations, by brands such as Carhartt WIP, are versatile everyday companions, while cashmere accessories from ZEGNA, Brunello Cucinelli or Loro Piana provide a touch of luxury that is able complement the finest of suits.
02. The scarves
If styled properly, a scarf can easily become the focal point of an outfit – particularly if it’s a chunky style with colour, texture and fringes. There’s something for everyone at MR PORTER – from Mr P. and Johnstons of Elgin’s pared-back, fuss-free styles (which wouldn’t look out of place over a suit and overcoat) to monogrammed mohair versions from LOEWE and Acne Studios, which are sure to stand out against all-black layers.
03. The gloves
Any style-discerning gentleman should have at least two pairs of gloves in his sartorial assemblage. One should be a pair that you can wear every day – and that is sure to keep you warm in sub-zero temperatures. Think thick, ribbed knits, or even down-filled shell; inside, look for insulating linings made from fleece or cashmere. The other pair should be the one you turn to when you’re kicking it up a notch. Top-stitched leather is a safe bet here, and so are neutral shades such as black, brown and grey.
04. The socks
If you’re wearing a suit every day, chances are socks are one of the only means to experiment with your style. Your wardrobe may be awash with greys, browns and black, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be a pop of colour peeping through, right? Opt for classic polka dots, seasonal Fair Isle or playful stripes to add a touch of irreverence to otherwise neutral layers. Alternatively, stock up on monochrome styles that will keep your feet toasty and comfortable in sturdy lace-ups and Chelsea boots.
