Three Wonderfully Light Jackets For Spring

Words by Ms Charlie Robertson

What to wear now the weather’s warmer, but not that warm.

Ah, spring. That magical time of year. The days are getting longer, the sun is making the occasional appearance, and you can finally start thinking about retrieving your summer clothes from the depths of your wardrobe. Until, that is, you get caught in a downpour. As wonderful as the notion of spring is, the harsh reality is that – especially if you live in the UK – you will experience a fair amount of rain. This year, the MR PORTER team have decided that the best way to deal with unpredictable weather is to have some fun with it. Enter, our three favourite (and somewhat nautical-themed) lightweight jackets. Scroll down to find out more.

ALL AT SEA

Spring is unpredictable, which means sometimes you could do with a hood to shield yourself from the wet weather, and at other times, you could do without. We know what you’re thinking. “Wouldn’t the perfect answer be a detachable hood?” It would indeed. Which is why we recommend Freemans Sporting Club’s water-repellent (detachable) hooded jacket – perfectly adaptable, whatever the weather. Wear it with these cotton-ripstop trousers from Folk – a durable, lightweight alternative to chinos or jeans – which continue the blue colour scheme.

ANCHORS AWEIGH

If you really want to go to town on the whole nautical thing and channel a classic sailor look, then Stone Island’s printed raincoat is the one for you. It’s both water- and wind-resistant, which makes it a great option for battling pesky April showers, and – you’ve guessed it – it’s got a detachable hood, so you can don it on those treasured sunny days, too. Wear it open (weather permitting) over a plain blue sweater, such as this one from Steven Alan.

PUSH THE BOAT OUT

If you want to make more of a statement, this Thom Browne jacket is just the thing. Crafted in Italy and emblazoned with the brand’s iconic stripes, it’s gone straight to the top of the Wish List of some of the braver members of the MR PORTER team. If you’re feeling extremely confident, pair it with this Thom Browne shark tote bag. Made from a sturdy pebble-grain leather, we can’t wait to take it for its first swim on the Central Line.
