Who wore it especially well at last night’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards.
Spare a thought for those poor celebrities in 2019. We are barely into the second week of January and already the stars of the film and TV industries are being wheeled out onto the red carpet for awards season, peacocked around in all their finery for the Insta-sphere to be either torn to pieces or applauded. We’re in the latter game, so are duly putting our hands together for the men who’ve kicked off the year at the Golden Globes in some truly spectacular clothes. Even Fiji Water Woman couldn’t steal the limelight from this lot.
MR TIMOTHEÉE CHALAMET

Every time Mr Timothée Chalamet graces the red carpet, he looks frustratingly fantastic. Seemingly immune to the curse of overexposure, Mr Chalamet consistently turns it out, and last night wore a sharp collarless Louis Vuitton shirt and… a sequined harness! One of Mr Virgil Abloh’s “accessomorphosis” creations, the harness embellished the outfit without being overly distracting, and made sure Mr Chalamet was head and shoulders above the sartorial competition. Oh, and Mr Chalamet’s mother (the actress Ms Nicole Flender) was there, too, dressed in Off-White.

MR TROYE SIVAN

Despite someone in the MR PORTER office remarking that the actor “looks like he’s wearing his dad’s suit!”, we can’t deny that Mr Troye Sivan cuts a fine figure in this oversized Calvin Klein 205W39NYC tuxedo. It’s big and boxy to be sure, but it’s also a contemporary silhouette that we expect will stick around for 2019. Also, a lesson from Mr Sivan in Generation Z accessories: square-toed shoes, white nail polish and a nose ring. Hey, if you can’t pull it off when you’re 23…

MR RAMI MALEK

Mr Rami Malek may well have won a Golden Globe for his role as Mr Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody last night, but, take a look at Twitter this morning and you will see that people are far more concerned about some rather unremarkable exchanges with Ms Nicole Kidman and Lady Gaga. How fickle. How shallow. But who are we to judge? We are here not to admire his incendiary acting skills, but merely what he wore (or what his stylist told him to wear). We’re mainly taken with that big white bow tie, which we will be attempting to copy at the next possible opportunity.

Mr Bradley Cooper

Mr Bradley Cooper may have lost out to Roma’s Mr Alfonso Cuarón for the Best Director award last night, but he can console himself with the fact that he has made our best-dressed list. Now, he can really celebrate. It takes a man of stature and maturity to pull off an all-white Gucci suit. But that is exactly what he did, with a little help from his girlfriend, Ms Irina Shayk.

Mr Ben Whishaw

Given the subject of A Very English Scandal – the BBC’s thrilling three-part dramatisation of British MP Mr Jeremy Thorpe’s attempted murder of his ex-lover Mr Norman Scott – Mr Ben Whishaw’s speech when claiming his best supporting actor award last night was apt. He called for more LGBTQ+ actors to be considered for straight parts, and his choice of a suit by a gay designer was also telling. But Mr Whishaw’s embellished Alexander McQueen jacket made its point visually, too. As with any statement piece, it pays to keep the rest of an outfit muted, but Mr Whishaw went one further by rocking an “air tie”. A winning lesson in how to stand out for the right reasons.
