Where better than the West Coast for catching Mother Nature’s evening show?.

Each of the 12 West Coast brands participating in our Made In California project interpreted the theme in a different way. Simon Miller designer Mr Daniel Corrigan decided to assemble a capsule collection that works as one cohesive concept – 12 mix-and-match pieces in different hues of blue and pink that together evoke a Californian sunset.

Simon Miller was founded as an LA denim brand, but since Mr Corrigan has taken over design, it has become more of a rounded casualwear company – and this capsule helps to demonstrate that. So as well as denim, there are indigo-dyed T-shirts, waxed cotton jackets and sun-faded pink corduroy that will all age well and develop character in a similar way to denim.

Given that the Californian sunset inspired this collection, we asked Mr Corrigan for his favourite spots to watch it.

“This is my hometown beach in Montecito, right outside Santa Barbara. My mom was in Seattle, Washington, but my dad was in Santa Barbara, California, so I grew up between the two. I spent all my summers at the beach. As a kid, I would go to Butterfly Beach all the time and surf until the sun went down, so for me it’s a very nostalgic place. Both of my little brothers are still really active surfers, so every once in a while I’ll go out with them.”

“I’ve been living here in Los Angeles for so long, and I find a lot of beauty in the city. One of the best things about LA is being able to go for a hike in the hills and the canyons so easily. Actually, I wouldn’t call it a hike – it’s more of a walk to be honest. Griffith Park is one of the best. You can walk right up to and above the Hollywood sign, then look down at the whole of the city from behind it. You get spectacular 360-degree views from there. It’s a pretty iconic place to be when the sun goes down.”

“Between Ventura and Santa Barbara, there’s a great 10-mile stretch of road where you’re just hugging the coast, and there are tons of places to pull over and watch the sun go down. I’ve done that a lot, either driving up from LA or coming back down from Santa Barbara on the beach side of the road where it’s even easier to stop. If traffic is frustrating, I’ll take a break, walk down to the beach and go for a swim in the water. It’s usually quiet and you have the beach pretty much to yourself.”

“This is part of the Soho House portfolio and I have to say, it’s particularly well done. It’s right on the beach at Malibu, just next door to Nobu (which can be a bit scene-y). Little Beach House is small – they’ve kept it for locals or people with a connection to Malibu – so it doesn’t feel overcrowded at all. It’s a great place to meet friends, sit out overlooking the water and have a sundowner. The bartenders mix an excellent margarita.”
