THE JOURNAL

From Mr Chadwick Boseman to Mr Tom Brady, those who wore it well this month and showcased spring’s hottest trends.
It’s the shortest month of the year, but here at MR PORTER, we rarely struggle to find candidates for our run-down of February’s best-dressed men. If anything, our problem is having too many to choose from. Apologies, then, to any celebrity reading this who failed to make the cut. We blame the powers-that-be in the music, fashion and film industries, all of whom choose February to host their biggest events of the year. Perhaps you could take it up with them (or your stylist)?
It’s not just the crowded awards-season schedule that make it a big month for style spotters. It’s a time of transition in the fashion calendar, too, when we start to pack away our winter clothes and really engage with the coming season’s trends. Accordingly, in the list we’ve compiled below, you’ll not only see some of the first examples of what spring 2019 has to offer, but a couple of great winter-appropriate looks, too. As tends to be the case at this time of the year, it’s best to keep both elements of your wardrobe close. You never know when winter might stage a late comeback.
MR NICHOLAS HOULT

It was at the Bafta Nominees Party in London where we witnessed an early appearance from one of the soon-to-be trends of the season: the trench coat. Mr Nicholas Hoult served up a masterclass in how to wear it well, opting for a black trench in a shorter cut and keeping the rest of his outfit dark. The burgundy Derby shoes are a particularly smart touch.

MR ARMIE HAMMER

Any working actor can employ a stylist for their TV appearance, but it’s a truly stylish man that turns up to a radio show dressed like this. Mr Armie Hammer was pictured leaving the offices of Global Radio in Los Angeles looking every inch the A-list star in a shearling jacket, Red Wing work boots and modish brow-bar sunglasses. It’s a great look, but is he not hot? Reporting from London, which has just experienced a February of record-breaking heat, we’re sweating just looking at this photo. What’s going on with the air conditioning in Los Angeles radio stations? Tweet us if you know.

MR CHADWICK BOSEMAN

Trend spotters, take note. Pastel pink is the colour of 2019 thus far and there’s no better deployment than on a suit. Rappers A$AP Rocky and Post Malone did it at the Grammys earlier this month. Mr Jason Momoa did it in velvet, complete with custom scrunchie worn around the wrist, on the Oscars red carpet. Hell, Mr Chadwick Boseman wasn’t even the only guy at the Vanity Fair afterparty to do it. So, what marks him out for special praise? Unlike his fellow celebrities, who leaned into the trend in a way that only A-listers on the red carpet really can, Mr Boseman made it look so… easy. Like anyone could do it. And that’s the great thing about the pastel trend: anyone can. Take note of his perfectly tailored trousers and the colour of his shirt, a subtle taupe, which, worn without a tie, softens the feel of this outfit even further.

MR RICHARD E GRANT

And the award for accessory of the year goes to Mr Richard E Grant’s Cheshire cat grin. The distinguished actor – a national treasure back in Britain, even if he wasn’t actually born there – wore an expression of permanent delight this awards season, his first, believe it or not, in more than three decades in the business. “This has never happened before and it is never going to happen again,” he told MR PORTER last year. We’re not so sure about that. He made such a splash on the red (or, in this case, blue) carpet that the establishment might see fit to invite him back next year, regardless of whether he’s up for an award. Here he is at the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, wisely sticking with the colour scheme set by the carpet.

MR JOE ALWYN

Back to the Oscars afterparty hosted by Vanity Fair, where, on a night dominated by adventurous takes on red carpet attire (more of which you can read about in The Daily), Mr Joe Alwyn did his best to keep the end up for traditional black tie. The young English actor, who has been doing the rounds for The Favourite, opted for a classic tuxedo worn with a silk cummerbund and a voluminous, 1970s-inspired bow tie. One for the ages.

MR RICHARD MADDEN

Mr Richard Madden has been riding high after his starring role in the hit TV series The Bodyguard, prompting speculation that he might just be the man to succeed Mr Daniel Craig as the next James Bond. We’re backing him all the way, and not just because he’s a fan of our own label, Mr P., although that might have something to do with it. Here he is “out and about”, as photographic agencies like to say, during New York Fashion Week in one of our shearling-trimmed suede bomber jackets. Very 007, don’t you think?

MR TOM BRADY

Quarterback extraordinaire Mr Tom Brady made it an unprecedented six Super Bowl victories this February, more than any other player in NFL history. At 41 years of age, he also became the oldest player ever to win a Super Bowl. And he did it without even throwing a touchdown. Really, what else is there left to say about the undisputed GOAT? Here he is dressed head-to-toe in Tom Ford – what a coat that is – on his way into the stadium on the night of the Super Bowl. We repeat: on his way into the stadium. The game hasn’t even started yet and he already looks like a winner.

MR CHIWETEL EJIOFOR

When you’re an actor of Mr Chiwetel Ejiofor’s talent and stature – by which we mean that your awards and nominations have their own separate Wikipedia page – it’s best to take a pragmatic approach towards dressing for awards season. You’re going to go to a lot of events; you can’t kill it every night. Take this outfit, for example, which he wore to the 69th Berlinale in Berlin’s Friedrichstadt-Palast. Smart, stylish and subdued, it speaks of a seasoned red-carpet dresser. He doesn’t need to throw down all his chips at once. He’ll be back.
