We’re having a senior moment. No, we’re not experiencing a temporary memory lapse while upholding a negative stereotype of older adults. Rather, we’re taking the time to celebrate our grandparents and, in particular, our grandmothers. First we were dressing like them (see the ongoing grannycore trend). Now we’re showering them with critical praise and awards. It is the least that they deserve. And with the new season of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, which stars Ms Lori Tan Chinn as her grandma, arriving on 18 August, we thought we’d take a deeper dive into our fixation with our elders and, indeed, betters.
**Yeah, yeah, grannycore – **we’ve already covered this. That’s old news.
This isn’t about A$AP Rocky wearing floral silk and lace. This is actual grandmas who rock, specifically the breakout star of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, which returns for a second season this week.
Awkwafina is a grandma? But she’s only 33.
Not that breakout star, the other one: her on-screen grandma, played by Ms Lori Tan Chinn, whom you might have also seen in Orange Is The New Black. In Nora, Awkwafina Snr listens to grime, gets her hair cut like Eminem and is all over social media. She’s even followed by actor Mr Taye Diggs.
That doesn’t sound like my grandma.
She’s full of sage advice, but knows how to make it relevant to a modern audience. For example, to illustrate a point about Nora making the most of her youth, she shows her granddaughter a photo of her own, well, let’s just say it goes into great anatomical detail, in a very NSFW way.

That certainly doesn’t sound like my grandma. So, what you’re saying is that she’s the OG.
Literally, since, in the first season, she ends up embroiled in a bitter turf war in an Atlantic City casino with a gang of Korean pensioners. Speaking of which, she’s not the only granny stealing the show. In April, actor Ms Youn Yuh-jung won an Academy Award for her role in Minari – as the grandma. Not content with outshining her younger co-stars, she gave the best, and funniest, speech at the Oscars, too.
OK, boomers.
That’s not all. Ms Jean Smart, who plays – you guessed it – the nan (and great-grandmother, in fact) in Mare Of Easttown is expected to clean up at the Emmys next month.
Now that does sound like my grandma. Confession time: she still does my washing. I’ve told her not to.
As in Smart is nominated for two awards and looks likely to win.
Oh.
But you’re not wrong to bring up grannycore. Much like your nana, the look is still going strong. And we’re not just clutching pearls. If anything, the fashion industry has only doubled down on the trend. That pastel shade of purple most commonly associated with women of a certain age was all over the menswear shows from Fendi, Ermenegildo Zegna and Dries Van Noten.
Noted.
With gendered clothing seemingly a thing of the past, perhaps the boundaries between generations are teetering, too. It might be time to make Ms Iris Apfel your style icon, as if she isn’t already. Dress your shoe size, in metric, doubled, not your age. YOLO! Enjoy it while you’re young.
Will do, just put the photo away. Please.
