MR PORTER’s New Year Resolutions

Words by The Daily Team

29 December 2017

The changes the MR PORTER team plan to make in 2018.

Given we spend our days dishing out style advice and serving up world-beating content for you, our dear readers, you might think we at MR PORTER are utterly selfless beings. But this is not entirely true. Sure, we very much enjoy providing the service that we do, but we also have our own hopes and fears to attend to. And there is no time like the end of a calendar year for a bit of self-reflection. So we dug deep and asked ourselves how 2017 went, and how we might make 2018 better.

Mr Adam Welch, Daily Editor

Next year, I want to go on more weekend trips around the UK. Partly because I recently had my car serviced and they actually laughed at the mileage. Partly because I’ve already bought a sort of (highly impractical) outdoorsy walking outfit (Junya Watanabe jacketSorel bootsPrada sweater) and I need to get some more wear out of it. But mostly because I want to spend a little less time and money in the pub every weekend. Well, the pub at the end of my road – ones outside London don’t count, do they? In terms of style resolutions, if I’m being honest with myself, I just need to get rid of some clothes. Any further investment will have to wait until that happens as I’m now swimming in the things. Which means I’m going to have to endure the bitter taste of my own medicine and have another look at a story that I commissioned last year – Mr Alfred Tong’s How To Streamline Your Wardrobe. Or, I don’t know, get a bigger house.

Mr Chris Elvidge, Associate Editor

I’m pretty lucky to have been born in a first-world country that caters to most of my basic human needs. It puts me that much further along the path to self-actualisation, and that’s great. Really, it is. When it comes to new year’s resolutions, though, I don’t believe that the point is to improve myself or find some sense of greater purpose. I make resolutions that will directly result in me having more fun. That’s why, on New Year’s Day, I’m going on holiday and not coming back until April. I might find myself. I might learn a language. I might do neither. But as long as I come back with a tan and a few stories to tell, it will all have been worthwhile. As for style, I’m keeping an open mind, but I expect to be wearing a few more short-sleeved shirts than I otherwise would in the period from January to April.

Mr Jonathan Dann, Editorial Assistant

In 2018, I aim to buy less, but buy better. This Dunhill cable-knit cashmere sweater is so soft I won’t want to take it off during colder months and it should last a lifetime, so long as my waistline doesn’t increase. My second resolution for 2018? Don’t increase my waistline.

Mr Ashley Clarke, Daily Staff Writer

I’m a big believer in the notion that fashion should reflect the world in which it exists, so my style resolution for the new year is wanton, unchecked capitalism. Just kidding. I do, however, plan on doing a spot of (wise) spending in the sartorial department come 2018. I don’t mean scrumming in high-street sales just for the cut-price hell of it, but focusing my attention on a few select things I’m absolutely sure I want and that I plan on wearing for many years to come (some Church’s Derby shoes or a Prada sweater, perhaps). Call them investment pieces if you like, but really it’s just an excuse to get myself some great clothes. Otherwise, my resolution for 2018 is to have as much fun as possible while still holding it all together. Wish me luck.

Mr Tom M Ford, Daily Deputy Editor

My new year’s resolutions are so basic and clichéd I almost don’t want to share them. But share them I will. Drink less. Tick. Eat more fruit and vegetables. Yep. Go to the gym more. Afraid so. Boring, yes, but as I approach my 30th birthday, these are essential activities in my quest to stave off the acute awareness I have of my own mortality. To make sure I don’t become insufferably dull, I also intend to wear clothing that is a little more exciting. If I’m damaging my personality in 2018, I may as well look a bit more interesting while I’m doing it. I recently discovered the joys of CMMN SWDN. And I am sure it will be pleased to benefit from the custom my avoiding the pub will afford.
