20 Interior Design Pieces For A More Stylish Home

Words by The MR PORTER Team

23 February 2024

Have you ever envied a home that somehow exudes a kind of artfully curated – yet impossible to achieve – individuality? A roster of perfectly chosen coffee-table books stacked next to the best-smelling candle you’ve ever encountered. Thoughtful ceramics and striking objects that prompt you to remark, “Where did you get this?” before you even know what’s coming out of your mouth. Bright, textural throws, cool-but-not-pretentious art and prints… And when your drink arrives, of course it’s served in glassware that you covet as much as everything that’s come before. How do they do it? Where do they find all these perfect things? We’ll let you into a secret – perhaps they found it here.

We understand that not everyone has the time or patience to scour the MR PORTER shelves, however, so we have done the hard work for you. Presented for your delectation below, our hand-picked edit of 20 bright and eye-catching pieces that are as stylish and unique as you (and now your home, too).

01. The geometric Alexandra Llewellyn backgammon set

Inspired by a love of backgammon that began as a child in Cairo and her background as a fine artist, Ms Alexandra Llewellyn creates exquisite hand-painted, assembled and lacquered sets that are so highly prized they have been commissioned by royalty. This particular set takes its cues from Art Deco motifs, and is comprised of hundreds of individual sycamore, walnut and blue bird’s eye maple pieces set in a solid oak case. A masterpiece to admire.

02. The stylish pop-art coffee-table book

To demonstrate your cultural credentials (and learn something along the way), choose a tome from Assouline’s style series, which explores iconic art and design genres. Pop Art Style traces the history and impact of the influential movement through over 180 images, from 1960s Swinging London and Mr Andy Warhol’s Factory to Mr Keith Haring and beyond.

03. The cosy and classic Burberry blanket

When Mr Daniel Lee joined Burberry as creative director in 2022, he decided to go back to basics. He took inspiration from the brand’s history to create long-lasting, practical clothing “for people that were outside doing things”. But inside, too. He took that sense of timeless design through to the homeware in his debut AW23 collection. This custard-yellow checked wool blanket is soft, sophisticated and the perfect accent for your sofa.

04. The GioBagnara billiard set

The key to creating a truly stylish home is to pay attention to the design of every single item you bring into it. So if you’re lucky enough to have space for a pool or billiard table, ensure you kit it out with the right kit. GioBagnara’s sleek billiard set consists of a handmade wooden box encased in full-grain leather and a set of billiard balls by Belgian specialist Saluc. The tray inside the box can be lifted out, offering an additional usage.

05. The modern Green Wolf Lighting lamp

This rechargeable table lamp by Green Wolf Lighting was hand-blown in Murano, Italy, by artisans who live and breathe (ha ha) the ancient art. A seafoam-green exterior surrounds a dimmable LED bulb that can either shine or flicker like a candle. Placed around your living space, they make genuinely beautiful additions to a dinner-party setup.

06. The full-bodied Houseplant vase

It’s nigh-on impossible to get your hands on an original Mr Seth Rogen-crafted ceramic piece. Which is why it’s so fortunate that the actor created Houseplant, a lifestyle brand that specialises in ceramics inspired by his own work. This Crackle vase comes sheathed in a unique glaze, meaning no two pieces will be alike. Although you will know that Rogen has at least one similar in his own home.

07. The luxurious Japan Best lucky cats

We’ve all said hello to those lucky cats, slowly waving at us from a shop window. These luck-bestowing figurines are believed to bring good fortune to their owners. This hand-painted gold and silver-toned set from Japan Best is an elevated take on the classic, but it still delivers the same level of joy (and, hopefully, luck).

08. The weirdly wonderful L’Objet ashtray

L’Objet specialises in strange but beautiful luxury home goods and this gold-plated ashtray is no exception. A collaboration between the brand and the artists known as the Haas Brothers, this little alien – or is it a slug? – serves its purpose with a good dose of humour. This is not your old man’s ashtray.

09. The sculptural L’Atelier du Vin champagne glasses

As far as celebrations go, they don’t get any more stylish than a glass of champagne served in L’Atelier du Vin’s Bubbles Celebration flutes. They’re designed by Ms Monica Guggisberg and Mr Philip Baldwin, and hand-blown by an artisan glassmaker, which means no two glasses are ever the same.

10. The LOEWE scented candle

LOEWE’s creative director, Mr Jonathan Anderson, works hand in hand with perfumer Ms Núria Cruelles to develop scents that evoke familiar aromas, as is the case of this Luscious Pea candle. Inspired by the sweet, green scent of a Victorian botanical garden, it’s housed in a sleek green vessel that can be repurposed as a catch-all tray once the wax has run out.

11. The colourful Missoni robe

There’s no better way to wind down after a long day than by slipping into a cosy robe, particularly if said item has been made by Italian luxury house Missoni. This one is patterned with the brand’s signature zigzag motif, which was first introduced in 1966 and has since come to represent its bold approach to colour.

12. The dreamy Paul Smith candle

Paul Smith’s scented Daydreamer candle makes for an excellent gift. Hand-poured to allow the fragrance to diffuse evenly, it’s scented with verbena, clary sage, lavender and hay, which will imbue your home with a gentle fragrance without being too overbearing. Use the contrasting blue lid as a coaster while it’s lit.

13. The tone- (and sun-) setting Pendleton blanket

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they say. And yet there’s a scientific explanation as to why desert sunsets are objectively better than those of other environs. The drier air means there are fewer large ambient particles in the atmosphere to mute the vivid colours. There’s only so much even the most powerful dehumidifier can do in your home. However, this ombré blanket by Pendleton, which pays homage to the skies over the Chihuahuan Desert, is on the right wavelength.

14. The where-did-you-get-those? R+D.LAB glasses

We could regale you with how these elegant R+D.LAB Gabri bowl glasses came into being, crafted in Italy from robust green borosilicate using a traditional mouth-blowing technique, but we’d just be blowing our mouths. In your head, you’re already swigging generously ice-stacked gin and tonics from them like you’re some Michelin-starred Basque chef.

15. The California dreamin’ Sonic Editions print

OK, brace yourselves, but those iconic palm trees are not, in fact, endemic to Los Angeles. Rather, the first were introduced to the region in the 18th century by Spanish missionaries, while a further 25,000 were planted ahead of the 1932 Olympics. And the “skydusters” captured in Mr Stephen Albanese’s effort for Sonic Editions are of the Mexican fan palm variety. Which, when you think about it, is actually pretty symbolic of LA, a city in which the main industry is about pretending to be something or somewhere else.

16. The Conran Shop’s sweet coffee mugs

How do we like our coffee? In a striking receptacle by The Conran Shop, preferably. Designed to stack in your cupboard, you’ll instead want these out on display, given the cheeky pastel shades of this three-piece glazed stoneware set, known as Candy. And no sugar for us – our mugs are sweet enough as it is.

17. The Elder Statesman’s cashmere octopus

Netflix’s 2020 documentary My Octopus Teacher taught us that the eight-limbed mollusc can be a man’s best friend. But not everyone can commit to daily outings in the ocean. This multi-coloured fella from The Elder Statesman – handcrafted from 100 per cent deadstock cashmere in the brand’s artisanal workshop in LA, and exclusive at MR PORTER – is the perfect substitute.

18. The Tom Dixon glass jug

Hand-blown from borosilicate glass and finished off with an ombré green tint, this glass jug by Tom Dixon is an avant-garde yet sleek addition to your space. Its mid-century vibe gives a cool, retro feeling, and you can use it as a jug (its exaggerated handle makes pouring easier) or as a vase (its size is ideal for a bunch of flowers).

19. The LOEWE mohair cushion

Mohair has been the it fabric these past few seasons, and that doesn’t only apply to fluffy sweaters. This colour-blocked cushion by LOEWE – made in Italy using the softest brushed mohair blend – will bring an instant cosy element to your interior and the serotonin-boosting red and pink colourway will make great strides in brightening up your day.

20. The BE@RBRICK Benjamin Grant figurine

Located in Tanzania, right by the border with Kenya, Lake Natron is famous for the alkaline, salty waters that give it a beautifully rich red-hued marble colour. Using a satellite shot of Lake Natron, taken by visual artist Mr Benjamin Grant, BE@RBRICK’s printed figurine is a playful addition for that empty corner in your home.
