THE JOURNAL

You’ve finally found it. Your signature scent. The fragrance that smells like you, but 10 times better. The One. The only problem? You’re not The One’s sole admirer. In fact, the heavenly cologne you’re convinced was concocted with you alone in mind happens to brand’s biggest seller (and hence impossible to keep in stock).
Not that there’s anything wrong with wearing the hit fragrance that everyone else can’t seem to get enough of. After all, if legions of people adore the same scent that has you in its thrall, then legions of people will adore the smell of you. But if you’re the kind of guy who’s looking to create an intoxicating and unidentifiable olfactory aura that is all your own – without the hassle of going down the bespoke route – then layering your fragrances could just be the solution you’re after.
But, before you make like a mixologist and transform your fragrance wardrobe into a chemistry lab, it’s worth knowing the pro tips for going about it. Below, in-house experts from Diptyque, TOM FORD, Jo Malone London and Le Labo share the secrets to foolproof scent pairing – plus the divine combinations that have earned their seal of approval.
01.
Find common ground
For fragrance-layering rookies, the most fail-safe approach for finding harmonious combinations is to pair scents that share common ground. This could be an ingredient, an olfactive family or, in somewhat less technical terms, a vibe.
At Diptyque, for example, those who tend towards florals might enjoy the generous tuberose notes of Do Son alongside the sweet wisteria, honeysuckle and jasmine of Olene. Likewise, if you have a penchant for rose (think Frederic Malle’s lavish Portrait Of A Lady), then you’ll likely be a fan of Diptyque’s L’Ombre Dans L’Eau, which is brimming with rose petals and blackcurrant, teamed with its more delicate Eau Rose Eau de Toilette.
Meanwhile at TOM FORD, the in-house experts recommend rounding out the palo santo, ebony wood and leather notes of Ébène Fumé with the similarly smoky Oud Wood for added mystery. Likewise, the splashy, summery feel of Soleil Blanc is a heaven-made match for the citrus-packed, Italian Riviera-inspired delight that is Neroli Portofino.
02.
Contrast deep with bright
Alternatively, there’s magic to be found in layering two fragrances that seemingly sit on opposing ends of the spectrum. Unlocking the right combo admittedly becomes a tad tricker here, but thankfully in-house experts have already uncovered an array of proven winners.
Jo Malone London’s fragrance and lifestyle expert Ms Emma South suggests embracing the citrus notes of Lime Basil & Mandarin in the “hypnotic allure” of Oud & Bergamot. Likewise, the zestiness of TOM FORD’s Neroli Portofino pairs beautifully against the brand’s intense Oud Wood. At Le Labo, meanwhile, many discerning clients enjoy layering their universally loved Santal 33, a spicy, sensual blend of cardamon, iris, violet and wood alloy, with their other fragrances to create their own unique take on the cult scent – with the crisp juniper and patchouli notes of Baie 19 a top pick.
Looking to round out your daytime scent with something richer come nightfall? Feel free to go bolder, as you’ll likely only be left with the lingering base notes of the first fragrance. If TOM FORD’s sensual Rose Prick is your evening scent, then kick off your morning with Neroli Portofino. If you prefer its vibrant chypre notes for the day, then top it off the intoxicating Tuscan Leather after dark. Fans of Diptyque’s floral Do Son Eau de Toilette for day might like layering on the spicy aromas of Eau Duelle Eau de Parfum for the evening. Le Labo devotees can perk up the last whispers of their nine-to-five scent with the effervescent Thé Noir 29.
03.
Look for the magic molecules
In 2006, Escentric Molecules launched a fragrance that upended the world of perfumery. Its sole component: Iso E Super, a synthetic wonder ingredient that smells unique on everyone – but can often be imperceptible to the wearer. In a similar vein, you’ll also find musky Ambroxan, which boasts similar qualities to Iso E Super and is likewise great for enriching other scents and boosting their wear.
For layering purposes, it’s worth looking for Iso E Super- and Ambroxan-heavy scents that will ground your other fragrances and infuse them with an amber, woody warmth. Take Le Labo’s Another 13, an intoxicating melange of ambrette seeds, jasmine, moss and plenty of Ambrox that makes for a versatile scent partner and works especially brilliantly with Santal 33. There’s also D.S. & Durga’s I Don’t Know What “fragrance enhancer”, which pairs both ingredients with bergamot and vetiver and has been tailor-made with layering in mind.
04.
Nail the technique
Is there a right way to layer your fragrance? Yes, say the experts at TOM FORD. Rather than spritzing with abandon and hoping for the best, the brand suggests starting with one spray of the deeper fragrance, followed by two sprays of the brighter fragrance – although note that that the deeper fragrance, which is richer in base notes, might seem the more subtle one at first.
Meanwhile at Diptyque, the house view is to spray both perfumes at the same time if you desire a perfect equilibrium between them (admittedly, doing so on your wrists might require a helping hand). Otherwise, if you prefer one perfume over the other, then spray your favourite lastly – and a little more liberally.
05.
Trust your nose
At the end of the day, there’s nothing more personal than fragrance – and how you choose to wear it is totally at your discretion. While the aforementioned combinations are guaranteed to delight, there’s plenty of fun to be had by experimenting, too.
Ultimately, say the experts, it’s about being led by your own tastes and what works for your mood, rather than following any strict diktats. And, hey, if that unexpected, rule-breaking concoction happens to elicit oohs and ahs from those around you, then all the better.
