THE JOURNAL

Gifting is no doubt the highlight of the holiday season. But once you’ve trundled through your nice list, it’s time to turn your attention – and funds – to what truly matters: yourself. Chances are that, as the Big Day creeps closer, so too have the invites started trickling in, providing no better excuse for going ham and acquiring a slew of new eveningwear pieces. But take note: much like workwear will resonate differently whether you’re commuting into a blue-chip bank or a design agency each day, party dressing isn’t as one-and-done as it sounds. Indeed, fine-tuning what you wear to the occasion is crucial. Here we’ve kindly eliminated all the guesswork for three different dos, so all you need to do is turn up fashionably late.
01.
The cocktail party

If there’s one party piece you spend a pretty penny this holiday season, make it a head-turner of a shirt. And to be clear, we’re not talking dad-on-vacation vibes here, rather something that strikes a contemporary-luxe note, such as this maximalist Casablanca creation that’ll get your fellow attendees talking. To avoid drowning out its impact, you’ll want to stick to a neutral palette elsewhere – LOEWE’s cashmere camel coat and SAINT LAURENT’s wide-leg trousers, while pared-back in hue, feel suitably sumptuous. And the right finishing touches are, as always, make-or-break. A patent black boot and a streamlined portfolio read just the right level of dressed-up for cocktails, while Hatton Labs’ glimmering tennis necklace will add a touch of festive cheer.

02. The office party

A sure-fire way to give off Big Scrooge Energy this season is to make no effort at all for the work party. For the sake of everyone’s festive spirit, do dress up a bit – but not so much that your colleagues think this is your sole social function of the year. Here, we’ve conceived an outfit that you could quite easily wear to the office and then straight out to the venue, without looking out of place at either. It’s all about the balance of everyday silhouettes with unconventional prints and textures, namely Lemaire’s striped silk shirt and Séfr’s patterned trousers in a rust-coloured corduroy. A suede jacket, such as this one by LE 17 SEPTEMBRE, and a pair of not-too-dressy loafers will knock things without dialling down the festivity too much. Finally, throw in suite of minimalist silver hardware, which will look as sleek after dark as it will the morning after.

03. The house party

Expectations will be low at a laid-back, at-home bash, but that doesn’t mean you can’t – and shouldn’t – endeavour to be the best-dressed man in the room (inevitably, the kitchen). And good news: you can quite easily do so in jeans. Just as long as a) they’re as flattering as this straight-leg pair by Our Legacy and b) you team them with the right accompaniments. Show off your style nous by layering pieces that shouldn’t logically work together, but somehow do. First, an on-trend white tank top, then an opulent evening shirt such as this velour piece by Karu Research, and finally a 1990s-grunge flannel. From there, try rounding it all out with a crochet bag and JW Anderson’s backless loafers, which will mark you apart from everyone else in their sneakers.
