Tees, Collectables And Streetwear: The Must-Have Pieces In Our Super Mart Collection

As excited as we are to be launching our Super Mart pop-up this week, we’re well aware that an influx of shiny, new, covetable things is enough to overwhelm even the most ardent streetwear supporter. With more than 350 hype-worthy pieces in the line-up – as well as a pack of up-and-coming new brands to introduce you to – you’d be forgiven for not knowing where to start. Good thing, then, that we’re here to show you around. Let’s take a look, shall we?
01.
Undercover MADSTORE

The star of our Super Mart pop-up is Undercover MADSTORE, the shop-within-a-shop format set up by the brand’s founder, Mr Jun Takahashi. Our edit is packed with iconic collectables, such as the Gilapple clock, Medicom Be@rbrick figurines and stickers, as well as graphic T-shirts, sweats and hoodies. It’s the first time these pieces have been available online and outside Japan, so we don’t expect them to hang around for long.

Gallery Dept.

There’s more than a dash of creativity in everything artist and designer Mr Josué Thomas does at Gallery Dept., his Los Angeles-based studio dedicated to repurposing and reimagining garments. Each camo chore jacket, made from vintage fabrics, is a one-off while a Rodman Riley bucket hat looks like the perfect kind of creative thinking cap. Then there are the unexpected items – a denim cushion, an embellished PVC and leather belt – that make the brand worthy of your attention.

POLITE WORLDWIDE®

POLITE WORLDWIDE® found itself in the spotlight earlier this year when Mr Justin Bieber was spotted sporting a string of its pink freshwater pearls. The true star of the LA-based sustainable brand is its way of taking items destined for landfill and upcycling them into desirable keepers, from tie-dyed T-shirts and bead bracelets to head-turning necklaces.

Better Gift Shop

As its name suggests, Mr Avi Gold’s Better Gift Shop is not your run-of-the-mill tourist trap. Instead, this emporium of delights from the Toronto-based streetwear veteran mixes elements of off-kilter surprise (water bottles, pet accessories, key fobs and stickers) with perfect gift shop mementos (souvenir hoodies and T-shirts).

FRIENDS WITH ANIMALS

If you like your streetwear with a side of compassion for creatures great and small, FRIENDS WITH ANIMALS is the brand for you. Its charmingly kitsch designs span sweats, totes, tees and made-to-order jewellery with endearing-sounding names such as the Enchanted Forest Mushroom necklace, but special mention should go to this exclusive letterman’s jacket with its very good boy mascot.

General Admission

True to its democratic-sounding name, General Admission, a new addition to MR PORTER’s shelves for Super Mart, has community at its core and seeks to tell stories, via mushroom-shaped homeware and printed shirts, about the distinctive neighbourhoods of Los Angeles (where the brand is based) to the wider world.

GOOD MORNING TAPES

“Let spirit guide us” is the mantra of this creative collective based in Seignosse on France’s Aquitaine coast, just up from surf mecca Hossegor. The photo of the guy tending plants on the label’s website should offer a clue. Wholeheartedly embracing the aesthetics of head shop paraphernalia, the brand asks its customers to pay homage to Gaia with each of its lovingly crafted limited-edition garments.

Burned Out

The band T-shirt is often a point of reference for the fashion industry, but British boutique Burned Out turns it into a higher art. By sourcing and repairing original merch from bands such as Nirvana, Metallica and Nine Inch Nails, it has become a showcase for these one-off wearable pieces of cultural history – and about as far removed from the knock-offs worn by Beavis and Butt-Head as you could imagine.

iggy

A skate brand named after an Alaskan klee kai dog – which we’d wager was in turn named after a certain indestructible garage rocker, whom himself sounds a little husky – iggy reveals designer Mr Jack Greer’s sideways view of the world, occasionally too literally. Previous collections have touched on skating injuries and graffiti in wet cement. True to form, for Super Mart, Greer is offering up some characteristically idiosyncratic styles, including this anthropomorphised muffin T-shirt.

Come Tees

The brainchild of artist Ms Sonya Sombreuil, Los Angeles-based Come Tees made its MR PORTER debut a few years ago, but has lost none of its hype appeal. For the Super Mart collection, Sombreuil dreamed up a handful of typically energetic prints, such as this standout Shiver example, but also added some choice accessories for your canine companion, including a dog collar and gold tag.

PARADISE

Another skateboarding brand, PARADISE was founded by Angeleno skateboarder (and star of the Supreme-produced Cherry) Mr Sean Pablo and is inspired by punk iconography, contemporary US culture, photography and the inimitable Pablo himself. The snoopy T-shirts are making us particularly happy.

Hatton Labs

We’re living through a shining, golden age of men’s jewellery (seriously, everyone’s wearing it) and a new wave of bright young craftsmen are starting to establish themselves. In the heart of London’s jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden, Hatton Labs might be the new kid on the block, but it’s revitalising the status quo with conceptual, cutting-edge and sustainable pieces crafted with sterling silver, opals and pearls.

Endless Joy

Not enough mythology in your wardrobe? You need some Endless Joy, then. The brand’s artful prints are all originals designed by painter Mr Stevie Anderson and incorporate mythological stories, psychedelic flora and art to create clothes (also throws!) that feel unique. Our favourite from Endless Joy’s Super Mart contribution is the exclusive Il Gatto Pazzo, or The Crazy Cat.

Beams Plus

Tokyo-based Beams has been importing American style to Harajuku, then sending it back out into the world with a twist since 1976. The Beams Plus label represents a vibrant combination of traditional and modern styles. For the Super Mart selection, it has teamed up with various artists to create an exclusive set of graphic T-shirts – and has thrown in a frisbee, too. Why not?

Billionaire Boys Club

BBC (aka Billionaire Boys Club) needs little introduction, founded as it was by the starry duo of Mr Pharrell Williams and Nigo in 2005. What does need highlighting, though, is the new range of Super Mart streetwear – and a skateboard – which feels a little more mature, but no less bold and creative with its banana graphics.

Martine Ali

New York jeweller Martine Ali makes every piece by hand in its Brooklyn studio and works exclusively in sterling silver on a range of bracelets, necklaces and chains. Each piece mixes a functional aesthetic with high-grade materials and a custom patina finish.

Pasadena Leisure Club

As the name implies, Pasadena Leisure Club’s creations (all made in the US) are about channelling a laid-back Southern California mood. That can mean a simple black or white logo-printed T-shirt or a fabulously retro icebox that’s perfect for the barbecue you are inevitably going to later.

Pop Trading Company

A brand that represents Benelux (The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg) skate culture, Amsterdam-based Pop Trading Company was founded by Messrs Peter Kolks and Ric Van Rest, who have both been entrenched in the skating scene since their youth. If nothing else, expect authenticity and this nostalgia-inducing cassette tape loaded with the brand’s favourite tracks.

Neo Legend

Press Start! Neo Legend’s consoles provide a transportive experience into the world of retro gaming. With Japanese backlit joysticks and a robust case designed with original art and gaming icons, including a cola-slurping Donkey Kong, the terminals are compatible with up to 3,000 games from the 1980s and 1990s and are the stuff arcade dreams are made of.

Hype Rugs

No prizes for guessing what this brand specialises in. Hype Rugs designs limited-edition, buzz-worthy rugs that feature pop-art iconography, such as Mr Takashi Murakami-style flowers, emojis and brand logos. More art than home decor, you could just as easily hang these on your wall as put them on the floor.

Jam Homemade

This established Tokyo brand brings together punk and pop-culture references to create a range of fashion-forward jewellery adorned with everything from safety pins and skulls to Gundam figurines. Jam Homemade has a strong track record of working with other brands, too. Past collaborations have included Stüssy and Star Wars.

Blue Blue Japan

Blue Blue Japan specialises in old Japanese dyeing techniques and often incorporates traditional iconography in its clothes (note Mount Fuji printed on the bandanas). Carefully crafting clothes that are straightforward, comfortable and made to last, Blue Blue Japan is not the type of brand to shout about how great it is, so we’re more than happy to do it for them.

Mr Maria

A Dutch design studio founded in 2006 by Messrs Jannes Hak and Lennart Bosker, Mr Maria is best known for its iconic Miffy lamp, shaped after the adorable rabbit character popular with kids in The Netherlands. It has more to offer, though, and not just for youngsters. We’re rather partial to the giant smiley.
25.
Acne Studios

Acne Studios will hardly be a new name to MR PORTER regulars. The Scandi brand has managed to uphold its cult status nearly three decades after it was founded. Part of an ongoing partnership with ceramics artist Mr Grant Levy-Lucero, this exclusive Americana-inspired T-shirt is the label’s sole offering in our Super Mart collection. But what a T-shirt it is.
