Some might call turning up to the Met Gala in a $43 Dickies jacket offensive. To others, it was a rallying cry against the status quo. Such is the intersection of contention and veneration that Mr Kanye West somehow manages to occupy with almost everything he does. But for an event that practically begs for at least a little in the way of outré dressing (especially considering this year’s theme was inspired by Ms Susan Sontag’s essay “Notes On ‘Camp’”) it was certainly unexpected that Mr West wore a workwear jacket to what is generally regarded as the celebrity event of the year.
Twitter lost its mind. Dickies probably had a brilliant day for sales on its Eisenhower jacket. And GQ deduced that wearing something decidedly not camp to the Met Gala was the campest thing ever, which, well… come on. Wake up, Mr West?

The point is that wearing a relatively inexpensive workwear jacket to a gilded event just to be facetious is just that. But wearing one to do virtually anything else? It’s something Mr West does well, and has been doing increasingly well lately.
This weekend, the rapper and his wife, Ms Kim Kardashian West, went out to Giorgio Baldi, a restaurant in Santa Monica, to celebrate their five-year wedding anniversary. Ms Kardashian West was characteristically dressed to the tens in a black bodycon dress and sandals that coiled around her legs like serpents. Her husband? A camel Carharrt “Detroit” jacket with a corduroy collar, a white T-shirt, and some black slacks and sneakers. Earlier this month, he was pictured near his home in Calabasas wearing the same jacket but in light denim, pairing it with heavy navy trousers and white boots. Both times, he was dressed simply, and both times he looked great.
Ms Kardashian West reportedly told Vogue that when her husband chose to wear that Dickies jacket to the Met Gala, it was because he didn’t want to steal her spotlight. Though there’s probably little danger of that happening, however, this solid penchant for workwear Mr West has developed means our eyes are firmly locked in his direction.
