THE JOURNAL

There are some among us who understand that the finer things in life can be found at home. What better feeling exists than returning after a long day or trip away and sinking into the quiet comfort of your own space – dressed in your most sumptuously soft loungewear, of course.
At MR PORTER, we too share in the thrill that comes after making the incredibly grown-up decision to cancel well-intentioned Sunday plans (or, better yet, when someone else cancels the plans), instead resolving to spend the entire day pottering around the house, listening to music, perhaps reading or indulging a hobby. This is true restorative rest, with no restrictions on your time, attention or body.
And what better time to indulge those self-care proclivities than the holiday season. So, this year, treat the homebody in your life to the perfect loungewear and watch them wind down in style.
01. The ultimate cosy hoodie
Leading the race in ultimate cosy items is invariably the hoodie. Well, it has a soft pouch for your head, so in the pursuit of full-body ensconcement, there’s not much competition. If you’ll be gifting a hooded sweater to a loungewear aficionado, look no further. Whether it’s a fine number from Brunello Cucinelli that features a mix of virgin wool, cashmere and silk, an exceptionally soft zip-up example from TOM FORD in eye-catching purple or an oversized-sleeve sweater in luxe and laid-back brushed cotton from The Row, you’ll be sure to please. And, best of all, once the festive season is over, these can easily be paired with jeans.
02. The vintage-inspired track jacket
If your loved one loves sportswear, but you’d rather they channel Mr Timothée Chalamet off-duty than Mr Robert Pattinson in Good Time, then get ahead and choose them a stylish track jacket to unwrap on the big day. Our tip is to go for a classic, retro style to channel a bit of trackside nostalgia. The shortlist for this year includes Gucci’s bold, all-over logo jacket, a refined leather option (exclusive to MR PORTER) from Marni and a chocolate brown silk satin-jersey blouson from SAINT LAURENT that oozes 1970s glamour and definitely won’t look out of place around the tree.
03. The perfect sweatpants
During the season of excess, a pair of extremely comfortable and, importantly, elasticated sweatpants may be on a few wish lists. But, as we well know at MR PORTER, comfort needn’t mean scruffy. Make sure your loved one has room for turkey and looks the part by picking them some smart sweats. One way to veer away from the clichéd grey trackies is to choose a straight-leg style, such as these garment-dyed embroidered pants from CHERRY LOS ANGELES (another MR PORTER exclusive). Otherwise, wrap up an expertly crafted classic pair like these dusky blue sweatpants from Auralee in substantial cotton. For someone whose taste is a little more avant-garde, Gallery Dept.’s paint-splattered sweatpants should fit the bill nicely.
04. The logo sweatshirt
Should you wish to be extra nice this year, why not stuff their stocking with a sweatshirt, too? At MR PORTER, we’re big fans of a logo sweat, which can bring a little extra streetwear flair to any outfit, whether that be a full tracksuit and a pair of chunky knitted socks for indoor-wear or jeans and a fresh pair of sneakers for the weekend. For vintage-lovers, Off-White’s net art-inspired graphics or SAINT Mxxxxxx’s distressed astrology motif are our pick. Alternatively, go for a bold arts-and-crafts-meets-heavy-metal look with Acne Studios’ glow-in-the-dark design.
05. The new half-zip
No longer the preserve of golf dads, politicians and members of the aristocracy, half-zips have made a remarkable comeback in recent years. They are perhaps the only piece of loungewear that so easily straddles the divide between smart and casual, adding a little laid-back affability to more structured outfits and bringing up the can-be-worn-outside quota when paired with sweatpants and Birkenstocks. Try one of these from Throwing Fits, Stone Island or Les Tien as a gift for one of your family or friends who prefers a classic or technical look.
06. The super-tactile fleece
The closest you might actually get to a warm embrace in clothing form, a fleece makes a wonderful gift – think of it as gift-wrapping a hug. We love this luxurious cashmere and silk half-zip sweater by Loro Piana, complete with suede trim, for a bit of understated elegance. For someone into the craft and handmade look, BODE is the obvious choice – this lace-front fleece is a prime example. Or for that hard-to-buy-for fashion-forward family member, we suggest KAPITAL’s abstract pattern and skeleton motif zip-through sweatshirt. Whichever you pick, your loved one will be sure to thank you.
