The three new denim styles you need to know.
In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s a changing world. Things that we once took for granted are slipping away from us faster than we can fully digest it. Terrifying really. But thankfully, the latest seismic change we’re considering at MR PORTER HQ is more of a happy affair, namely that Swedish brand Acne Studios has re-jigged, re-styled and masterfully simplified its enviable denim offering, which is now and (presumably) forevermore to be known as Blå Konst (that’s “blue art” in Swedish.) Now, rather than the pleasant but slightly confusing range of jeans styles that used to be on offer, the range has been narrowed down to three key silhouettes – North (slim), River (regular) and Land (loose). This is all well and good – we’re never ones to protest when fashion decides to do away with a bit of the nonsense – but how exactly do you wear them? Scroll down for the MR PORTER guide.

North (slim fit)
Acne Studios jeans have long been among those wardrobe staples that we at MR PORTER refer to as “essentials”, and the new North fit is the perfect example of why. Cut slim in unwashed denim with minimal detailing, these are jeans that will work as well for smart-casual dressing as they will at the weekend (switch them up when they fade a bit). For the former eventuality, we recommend pairing them with a crisp blue shirt, which will bring out the deep blue indigo colour of the denim. And if you want to be really dressed up, add a light navy blazer as well.

River (regular fit)
This new fit may be described in the Acne Studios literature as “regular”, but in reality it’s a rather quirky one, featuring a tapered leg and a slightly cropped length, so the hem sits just above the ankle. In black, there’s something a little bit rock-and-roll (in the 1950s sense) about these jeans, so pair them with a loose camp collar shirt from Los Angeles’ AMIRI to turn up the volume.

Land (loose fit)
A loose-fitting jean is most definitely a casual one. In fact these days, given that most people err on the slim and/or skinny side, it’s a bit of a renegade style statement, implying a certain freewheeling, artistic bent. Given this, we’d recommend wearing this pair of loose Land jeans from Acne Studios with a piece of a similarly independent character – namely this washed linen bomber jacket from Japanese brand Kapital. Together, they’ll give you an artfully faded look that will certainly raise eyebrows, but in a very appreciative way.
