What To Buy From The MR PORTER Summer Sale (Before We Do)

Words by The MR PORTER Team

5 June 2023

The MR PORTER Sale only comes around twice a year – blink and you may miss it, resulting in another six-month-long wait on what could be the deal of the century. Behold, the summer Sale begins. It’s exciting, it’s enormous and it’s slightly overwhelming. To help you sort through the jolly madness, the MR PORTER Team have chosen a few of our favourite gems. You’ll notice a few of them might seem a bit, well, out of season for June (shearling? Cashmere?). But, believe us, when that cold weather rolls back around, you’ll be thanking your utterly genius foresight. These are pieces to invest it now for a glorious future, you simply must trust us.

01. Mr Olie Arnold, Fashion Director

The stylish On-Running sneakers

Good sneakers do not hang around in the Sale for long. So, if you’re thinking of snapping up a pair, this is the time. Like, now – go! Me? I’ll be grabbing this pair from running brand On. They’re technical and 100 per cent fit for purpose (running, of course), but I like them for another reason – they actually look good when worn with tailored trousers. It’s hard to find such a perfect sneaker but this might be it. So run, don’t walk (but don’t run faster than me).

The supple Officine Générale leather jacket

You can never have too many leather jackets, right? That’s what I will tell myself as I slide this one, from Parisian brand, Officine Générale, into my bag. It’s an investment, yes, but I am always down to invest in items that will last forever and likely never go out of style. A black leather jacket is just such an item – especially when wrought in a classic tailored fit like this. I will probably be getting this a few sizes up for a boxier look and to lower the cost per wear – my husband will be able to take it for a spin as well.

03. Mr Kwesi Amoasi, PR and Communication Assistant

The statement TOM FORD sneakers

Statement trainers are for the bold, and these TOM FORD sneakers have been in my Wish List for a couple months. Sneakers with Italian craftsmanship? Too good to be true, you may think. But look, Mr Tom Ford hath provided. He didn’t exactly play fair with this pair with the alluring protruding sole, which lends a touch of modernity to a classic running silhouette. The extension of the sole on the side profile is a nice touch, too, with the gum complimenting the muted tones of leather, suede and nylon of this colour way.

The Mr P. patchwork cardigan

Is it wishful thinking to say that cardigans aren’t just for grandads these days – or just another symptom of me not getting any younger? Either way, this piece from Mr P. is as edgy as a cuddly, cosy cardie can be, what with its asymmetrical patchwork and raw wool. (Like ODB, oh baby I like it – wool, I presume he meant – raw.) I could buy it now and put it away for autumn. Or my autumn years. Both work.

05. Mr Chris Hall, Senior Watch Editor

The Acne Studios baseball cap upgrade

I’m not Kendall Roy. I don’t want to be Kendall Roy. But it is hard to deny the facts: since my Succession obsession reached its zenith, I have become a man deeply fond of quiet-luxe hats. I want soft textures. I want subtle colours, and no trace of a visible logo. I don’t – necessarily – want control of a multibillion-dollar media empire, but no one’s ever offered. This cotton-canvas baseball cap from Acne Studios gives old-faithful, been-round-the-world-by-train-and-truck vibes, until you lean in close and see the pristine leather trimming. It will prove a valuable asset to add to my headgear portfolio. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and convince the board to sign off on the acquisition.

The great big Miles Leon wool coat

You wanna talk about investments? Nothing pays better dividends than a luxurious coat, in my view. Better yet, a luxurious coat bought for an absolute steal during sale season? Even your tight-arse accountant would say you’d be silly not to. True to this statement, my last three outerwear purchases (a classic trench, a vinyl trench and a glossy supersized puffer) have all been discount finds – I’d have had to take out a sizeable loan otherwise. But I’m yet to get my hands on the perfect smart-but-cool, versatile-but-not-black wool coat that makes everything underneath it look expensive. It’s tricky criteria to meet, but Miles Leon has somehow done exactly that – and I’ll be snapping it up come pay day, if someone else doesn’t get their mitts on it first.

07. Mr Tobias Wightman, Social Media Editor

The absolute classic Common Projects sneaker

A heads up for the simple sneaker aficionados: the much-loved Common Projects’ Achilles sneakers are hitting the Sale – and just in time for peak sneaker season. The cult brand’s signature minimalist design easily make these shoes the most versatile in sneaker history (yeah, I said it). Common Projects such as these rarely get marked down, so you’ll need to be hot on these Achilles’ heels to snap them up before other eagle-eyed shoppers.

The Elder Statesman Fair Isle sweater

There’s no fun in writing about nice clothes if you don’t indulge in some yourself, right? If you’re anything like me, investing in a sweater right at the start of summer can feel like something of a bold move, and finding a viable option that you can wear year-round seems an even trickier business. But I’ve had my eye on The Elder Stateman’s knit ever since we visited the brand’s LA factory as part of our In America campaign, and now that it’s in the sale, there’s no better time to cave. The label’s signature uber-soft cashmere makes it a worthy investment, sure, but the unconventionally colourful argyle pattern is what really caught my attention – it’ll infuse any outfit with the Californian laid-back spirit the brand is known for.

09. Mr Chris Elvidge, Marketing Editor

The Kingsman investment shearling jacket

The MR PORTER Sale is basically the adult equivalent of the Stanford marshmallow experiment: patience + willpower = reward. We’re talking delayed gratification, people! It’s all about investing in future you. And there can surely be no finer example than this never-out-of-style shearling jacket from Kingsman. It’ll be as good as useless for the next six months, but come next winter, I’ll be patting myself on the back – my cosy, shearling-clad back – for having had the foresight to pick it up at a discount when practically identical coats are going for full price. I encourage you to do the same.

The Row’s cashmere sweatpants

The received wisdom around sale shopping advises you to stick to the brands, shapes and styles that you already wear, to avoid getting swept up into buying something you’ll never have any use for. But I’d like to offer a rebuttal. Sale season is the time for envisioning a different, better version of yourself: someone, for instance, who wears virgin-wool sweatpants so soft you could use them to cradle kittens. Who cares if every pair of sweatpants you currently own is stretched and pilling? The new you will take care of them better. The new you will wear them to buy fresh bread and flowers on Saturday mornings. The new you should probably buy the coordinating sweatshirt, too.
