THE JOURNAL

We’re all creatures of habit. Once we find something that works, we stick with it. And that’s usually the right approach. However, there are a few things worth updating from time to time. A refresh in the bag department, for instance, will elevate your look and take the guesswork out of styling. What’s more, an investment bag can be considered something of an heirloom. In fact, it may get even better with age – meaning that it can become that cherished piece you rely on over and over again. So, get one of each of these in the bag and you’ll be set for any occasion.
01. The carry-all tote
Likely the most adaptable type of bag on this list, a tote can come in all shapes and sizes. From fabric bags taking up space under your kitchen sink and outdoors-ready nylon ones to luxe styles that can easily replace a briefcase on your daily commute. We’ll focus on the latter – no-nonsense bags that bear the markers of high-quality craftsmanship and are certainly worth the hefty investment. Think of LOEWE and Bottega Veneta’s recognisable leather-weaving touches, for instance. Or bags that show how quiet luxury should be done, such as the latest arrivals from TOM FORD and Mr P.
02. The weekend bag
A well-made weekend bag will carry – quite literally – serious weight. It’s aptly named to ideally fit a change of clothes and shoes, a wash bag and personal effects. Whether you use it for city breaks, business trips, gym runs or just in lieu of a briefcase, you’ll want to make sure it’s made from a durable material that’ll withstand wear and tear, such as thick canvas or leather. Also, that it has top handles as well as a shoulder strap, so that it can be carried cross-body through busy terminals. For a casual get-up, turn to Bleu de Chauffe’s styles (this one’s part of our Consciously Crafted edit) or to Brunello Cucinelli for something a little smarter – but just as spacious.
03. The practical cross-body
A cross-body bag is the kind of accessory that has the power to completely change an outfit – or even be its main character. But it’s also functional. And as long as the bag in question is well-sized (so that it serves its key purpose), the rest is carte blanche. If your style leans towards the more casual, playful side of things, opt for Gucci’s monogrammed bag or another sculptural number. To take it up a notch, you can’t go wrong with monochrome messengers from the likes of Jil Sander and CELINE HOMME.
04. The style-forward briefcase
Let’s get to business. Italians call the briefcase “24 hours”, because any self-respecting, investment-worthy style should fit everything you need for a day’s work. Think of a spacious main compartment for your devices and agendas, then. Plus, plenty of organisational pockets for stationery and essentials. Now, the style will entirely depend on the level of formality of the environment – and remember you’re looking to leave a lasting impression. You can’t go wrong with a black, structured one for smarter settings, but the recent loosening up of formal dress codes means that you’ll look just as stylish with a slouchier one.
05. The standout suitcase
Assuming everyone will prioritise utmost comfort in the sartorial department, a well-made suitcase may just be the easiest way to make a stylish statement at the baggage reclaim. For the style-discerning gentleman, their bags should be just as well thought-out as what’s inside them, after all. Look for sleek design features from the likes of FPM Milano, but equally functional details, such as a telescopic handle, 360-degree wheels and buckled straps and internal zipped compartments to keep all your belongings organised.
