Who Were The Best-Dressed Men Of October 2024?

Words by Emma Pradella and Mr Jim Merrett

6 November 2024

Darkness falls across the land / The midnight hour is close at hand… Yes, there can be that side to getting dressed in October. The werewolves, witches and wherewithal of Halloween. However, if “the funk of 40,000 years” you have in mind is more in line with classic, time-tested menswear rather than anything Mr Vincent Price refers to in the Thriller outro, take note. Treat yourself to red-carpet attire and off-duty outfits that stop well short of being costumes. Eveningwear to bump up your Instagram following, not that goes bump in the night. Below, eight thrilling looks that no mere mortal can resist.

01. Mr Cillian Murphy

In Small Things Like These, the adaptation of Ms Claire Keegan’s novel of the same name, Mr Cillian Murphy plays an Irish coal merchant who visibly wears all of the worries in the world. Less so the Oscar-winning actor IRL, instead looking far less tense in a mustard jacket and khaki shirt. Not entirely relaxed – Murphy’s famous for, among other qualities, being seemingly uncomfortable while on promotional duties – but not the ball of nerves of the film. As well as the colour scheme, what makes this outfit work so well is the depth of textures. Plus, that one lone black button on the jacket. Small things like these, it must be said.

02. Mr Loyle Carner

You may not have heard of colour analysis just yet, but you know who definitely has? Mr Loyle Carner, or his stylist. The 30-year-old British artist knows what shades work for him – and this palette of autumnal browns, beiges and blues that perfectly complement one another is the case in point. The walnut sweater and coffee wide-leg pants feel rich and luxurious. Add a trench coat and Burberry highlighter-blue checks and you’ll get that easy, London look that he’s become known for.

03. A$AP Rocky

There’s only one way to describe A$AP Rocky’s personal style, and that’s… personal. Not only is he really good at picking the right items, mixing and matching classic and contemporary, weaving the latest trends into the everyday as if it was a special occasion – he’s even better at styling them. But then again, a normal day in the life of A$AP Rocky may just be a special occasion, which explains the two-piece suit, colour-coordinated shirt and overcoat and ridiculously harmonious pattern clash.

04. Mr Archie Madekwe

When it was popularised, the cummerbund was used to prevent the shirt from poking untidily below the buttoning point of your jacket, preserving, in that way, the immaculate form that’s expected from formal dress codes. Such sartorial choice – or anything that vaguely recalls it, such as these custom LOEWE wrap trousers – feels rather rebellious in our day and age. But perhaps not at the hands of Mr Archie Madekwe, Saltburn’s rebel par excellence. Patent leather shoes and an equally eye-catching satin shirt make him stand out, despite the pared-back colour palette.

05. Mr Andrew Garfield

Not the most notable accessory we’ve seen Mr Andrew Garfield out with this past month – that would be the cardboard cut-out of his We Live In Time co-star Ms Florence Pugh at the London Film Festival, which she was unable to attend. The classic round-faced timepiece, however, is experiencing an uptick, as we recently covered. OK, go on then – also the gold horse head embroidered onto his denim jacket, which his stylist Mr Warren Alfie Baker admits is a cheeky nod to the carousel nag from said movie turned meme that has been jockeying with Garfield and Pugh for top billing. The actor himself proves to be more than a one-trick pony here, with a clean, casual getup that’s on the nose.

06. Mr Malcolm Washington

How do you get away with wearing a fitted cap on a red carpet? You ask, Mr Malcom Washington answers. With something that takes the whole outfit up a notch without making it feel out of place, that is. A Prince of Wales oversized blazer, in this instance, dressed down with a plain tee and utilitarian jeans. To ground the look, a pair of apron-toe Derbies that are sure to step up to the occasion.

07. Mr Dan Levy

When it comes to formalwear, black is perhaps the default setting. And we get it. It doesn’t need much in the way of thought to look put together – plus, it’s usually flattering. But it doesn’t always stand out. Which might explain why we’ve zeroed in on Mr Dan Levy and his creamy-white double-breasted suit as a highlight of the past month’s style. What’s also helping Levy seem at ease is the generous cut of his clothes. Lapels that stretch almost to his shoulders, a waist with just a hint of cinch and trousers that comfortably pool. The colour clearly agrees with the lighting – although wearers should stick to champagne over red wine.

08. Mr Jeremy O Harris

The recently renovated Burberry store on 57th Street in Manhattan features great slabs of limestone, hand-tufted textile installations by the London-based artist Mr Tom Atton Moore and replicas of the gabardine garms worn by the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. And yet we found ourselves drawn to the beguiling look of Mr Jeremy O Harris instead. Not that there’s anything too complicated going on here. Moreover, the playwright demonstrates the impact that a show of restraint can have. A pared-back palette that hovers around the brown segment, with a rich buttoned-up shirt beneath a finely pinstriped double-breasted suit jacket and chestnut lace-up shoes peeking out under the slightly flared trousers. And this is before he’s had a chance to raid the shop’s rails…
