The 10 Most Stylish Moments Of 2023

Words by Mr Max Berlinger

20 December 2023

One year, 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days: countless opportunities to look good. That’s how we, here, at MR PORTER, like to think about the passage of time. There are so many different people who inspire us and events that shape the way we think about style. As we close out the year, we look back at some of the most influential and exciting moments in style news — the people, the moments and the looks that kept us talking all year ’round.

01. A reminder of Mr David Beckham’s sartorial influence

Netflix’s four-part documentary Beckham may have focused its sights on the legendary player’s vast on-the-field accomplishments and meteoric career – rightly so – but it could not ignore the fact that he’s also long been a style vanguard. Back in the early 2000s, when his football career was on its staggering rise, Mr David Beckham captured the world’s attention with his swaggering, boundary-pushing style. The documentary demonstrates that while Beckham certainly enjoyed spending his newfound money on clothes, cars and watches, he also savvily understood how to use them to build a personal brand, long before social media made this a commonly held idea.

Perhaps most telling was in the final episode when he gave us a glimpse of his meticulously organised closet. Beckham, who has openly shared his struggles with OCD, even revealed that he has a small rack in his room where he preps the outfits for the week ahead – a brilliant idea by a man who approaches everything from sport to style with a seriousness that borders on, well, obsession. The revealing look had us once again reconsidering Beckham’s vast contributions not just to the game of football, but the world of men’s fashion.

02. An unexpected approach to summer suiting

As temperatures peaked this summer (thanks, global warming), it’s no big surprise that men started to embrace the common undershirt as outerwear. So, seeing a man in a shoulder-baring, U-neck ribbed tank top became commonplace. An unexpected development, however, was when they started wearing them under classic tailoring. From actor Mr Paul Mescal to music producer Mr Mark Ronson, men took the stuffy shirting out of their summer suits and swapped in a lightweight, warm-weather solution.

The look was as surprising as it was stylish, and a reminder that, despite the overwhelming sense that the suit was primed to go the way of the dodo, all it takes sometimes is a little imagination to make it look fresh again. Stylist Mr Warren Alfie Baker, who dresses Messrs Andrew Garfield and Penn Badgley to name but two, expressed his fondness for the style earlier this year: “I love a tank top under a suit, it creates a lower neckline that has a slightly sexier feel.” Consider, then, the tank top when next year’s wedding season creeps up – just a friendly reminder to do those push-ups.

03. Thom Browne takes a victory lap

Everywhere we looked this year, Mr Thom Browne was there. There’s a reason for that – the brand (and the man) celebrated 20 years in business. Congrats, you shrunken-suit legend. From his theatrical couture show in July to his lavish, photo-filled coffee table book, released with art imprint Phaidon, to his special shout-out in season two of The Bear, Browne was firing on all cylinders in 2023. And, as far as anniversaries go, it afforded us a moment to take stock on how influential and prolific he’s become over the course of two decades. Browne’s vast snug-tailoring influence has taken hold of the zeitgeist, subverting the idea of what suits can and should look like. For Browne, the sky’s the limit.

04. Dad style, redux

Dad style has been a fashion world obsession since Balenciaga sent men wearing frumpy slacks, chunky sneakers and oversized dress shirts down the runway in 2017. However, in 2023, our thinking on dads evolved, giving them their fair due as trendsetters.

A$AP Rocky, who has fathered two children in as many years with superstar and fashion icon Rihanna, is taking it to the next level. He wore denim and diamonds at Mr Pharrell Williams’ debut for Louis Vuitton, and a plaid kilt to the Met Gala. He wore a leather jogging suit by Bottega Veneta (and a roomy, lightweight suit from the brand) and the subdued “quiet luxury” garb from the new Gucci collection under designer Mr Sabato De Sarno. But best of all, he wears matching outfits with his son, who donned a blinged out leather belt decked out in diamonds and rubies by the jeweller Mr Alex Moss. Somehow, it’s cringe-worthy when normal fathers and sons match, but cool when Rocky does it. Go figure.

05. Mr Harry Styles, Hockney’s muse

Many people already consider the flamboyant musician Mr Harry Styles a fashion muse. But now, he’s a bona fide art muse, after the 29-year-old sat for the famed painter Mr David Hockney, who has himself been inspiring fashion designers for decades. Over two days, Styles posed for the legendary artist at his studio in Normandy, and naturally he wore an outfit worthy of being memorialised: blue jeans, a white tank top, an orange-and-yellow striped cardigan, a handful of rings and a pearl necklace (also present: his signature curls). It was a page from his playbook – classic, exuberant and just a touch eccentric. “David Hockney has been reinventing the way we look at the world for decades,” Styles told Vogue. “It was a complete privilege to be painted by him.”

06. “Quiet luxury” entered the chat

After years of clothes festooned in logos, and the Gucci-led love of maximalism, the winds of fashion began to change this year. The global economy was jumpy due to conflict and the lingering effects of Covid, and the one-percenters began to retreat into familiar, classic styles and away from look-at-me statement pieces. This shift has come to be called “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth”. Perhaps best exemplified by the Roy family in the billionaires behaving badly family/corporate drama Succession, the look is, well, discreet to the point of unnoticeable, at least to untrained eyes.

Brands such as Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana, long champions for this mode of dressing, became de rigueur — along with their quarter-zip sweaters, baseball caps and quilted vests, all made of rarefied fabrics, crafted by artisans and costing many thousands of dollars. With her restrained courtroom attire, Ms Gwyneth Paltrow helped solidify the movement. But perhaps the biggest moment came when Gucci’s new creative director showed his debut collection – a low-key, drama-free and utterly wearable lineup.

07. Bag boy

It’s been a big year for Mr Jacob Elordi, a big guy carrying small bags. The Aussie, until now best known for his role as Nate Jacobs in Euphoria, debuted two big-name movies this year. He starred as Mr Elvis Presley in Ms Sofia Coppola’s dreamy Priscilla, and plays an old-money scion in the psychosexual thriller Saltburn. Still, our favourite moment of the year was when the actor was spotted with a string of handsome handbags. From Fendi and Bottega Veneta to Valentino Garavani and Louis Vuitton, Elordi not only displayed a varied affinity for bags of all shapes and sizes, but the power of a perfectly placed accessory to make or break an outfit.

08. The rise of the celebrity creative director

Earlier this year, Pharrell Williams showed his debut collection as men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton. The brand shut down one of Paris’s most iconic bridges and sent a small armada of boats to ferry over A-listers, including Rihanna, Ms Kim Kardashian and Jay-Z, who even performed afterward. The clothes were easy-going, laid-back streetwear, picking up from Mr Virgil Abloh, the designer who preceded Williams and tragically passed away in 2021. But in some ways what was shown on the runway was, almost, besides the point. It was more about creating a star-powered moment that cemented Louis Vuitton’s place as a cultural institution rather than mere fashion label. And in that respect, the brand succeeded.

09. Mr Travis Kelce steps into the spotlight

An unknown football player got his big break this year thanks to a pop princess named Ms Taylor Swift. Just kidding. But it does go without saying the MVP Kansas City Chiefs tight end Mr Travis Kelce did get considerably buzzier this year when he was rumoured to be dating Swift — a report that has since been confirmed. But beyond his high-profile relationship, Kelce’s bold, swaggering style has also stepped into the spotlight: trim tailoring, baggy pants, loud prints, flashy sneakers and eye-catching sunglasses. We’re all for his self-confident style and we hope that he’s the one that helps Swift finally get her “Love Story”.

10. ’Stocks rising

Have Birkenstocks sold out? Depends on who you ask. But one thing’s for certain, the sandal once a side-eyed faux pas among the fashion cognoscenti has proven to be an unexpected stalwart in the shoe market. That’s because in October of this year, the German brand known for its cork footbeds listed itself on the US stock market for $46 a share, valuing the brand at a whopping $9bn. It’s a long climb from its humbler days as the footwear choice of a certain crunchy granola Northern California bohemian (plus the tech wizard Mr Steve Jobs).

Still, the shoe has a deep history, dating back to 1774 (making it technically older than the US by two years). A similar version was offered up by Ms Phoebe Philo during her tenure at CELINE and then the casualisation of the clothing market, hastened, in part, by the pandemic, made them a buzzy shoe embraced by Millennials and Gen Z. Who could have seen this rags-to-riches tale coming? Well, Steve Jobs.
