THE JOURNAL

No two men are the same and nor should they be. However, among the flourishes of individuality you might get from the latest cult LOEWE bag or a handmade BODE piece, there are certain staples that every man needs in order to build a long-lasting and reliable wardrobe. With this in mind, and as summer beckons (OK, whispers), we decided to put together a list of the 10 items we believe to be true essentials.
Our intention with this edit was to select the clothing that most men would find most useful this season. What do we mean by “useful”? Well, these are classic, timeless pieces that are free from the fickleness of trends and therefore exceedingly versatile and, indeed, valuable. The essential essentials, if you will. Investing in a few items from this list will at the very least bring some solid options to your warm-weather wardrobe. Or feel free to buy the lot – we’re not about the stop you.
01. The lightweight knit
As far as extra layers go, you really can’t go wrong with a knitted sweater. But you can also go a lot more right. In the warmer months, turn to looser stitches and fabrics with good temperature regulation qualities. Crew-neck pullovers, as the name suggests, can be easily pulled on over most base layers, while cardigans and knitted polo shirts offer a smart point of difference. Touchpoint brands such as Brunello Cucinelli have turned knitwear into a signature move, so look out for its premium materials and bold touches of colour.
02. The bag
In the era of the “It” bag, a tatty old canvas tote will no longer do. And for men about town – and particularly for those frequently on the move – few options for day-to-day use are more practical than holdalls. For quality-assured craftsmanship and office-ready versatility, you can’t beat a seasonal suede style from Métier, which will wear its years well. For city breaks and off-duty days, look to signature designs from LEMAIRE and CELINE HOMME.
03. The summer jacket
The weather may not know if it’s coming or going, but at least you will. And besides, you really should be getting your wardrobe ready for the sunny season at this point. From a lightweight blouson that will fly to the top of your Wish List to a denim trucker that is miles better than most, stick to summer-ready outerwear from brands such as Frescobol Carioca and Nudie Jeans. For a more casual look, consider Stone Island, or opt for an all-white style by Blue Blue Japan.
04. The blazer
At MR PORTER, we’re here to champion – and cater for – all shapes and sizes. This wedding season, what if we told you that there’s an item of clothing that will not only fill out your shoulders, but also nip in your waist? Introducing the wear-everywhere blazer. It’s an enduring piece that will smarten up any look – especially in the deft hands of Canali, De Petrillo and Mr P. (see our Consciously Crafted collection). But it’s also easily adapted to more casual ensembles. Broad appeal, then.
05. The casual shirt
When it comes to shirts, casual can mean relaxed, but it certainly shouldn’t be careless. Which is to say that everyday doesn’t need to be ordinary. Or that something that looks thrown on doesn’t have to be literally thrown on. In short, rethink your shirt. From a breezy linen style or a camp-collar style to a more structured button-up, take this staple up a notch with brands such as Drake’s, Mr P., AMI PARIS and more.
06. The jeans
Good genes are a cruel lottery. But good jeans? Much more obtainable (again, see our Consciously Crafted collection). Every man needs a pair. And since you’re likely to be wearing them a lot – even in summer – it’s worth investing in some that will last. We suggest going for an endlessly wearable straight-leg pair. Here, AGOLDE, FRAME and Carhartt WIP have your legs covered.
07. The white T-shirt
Originally an undergarment, but given a main-character makeover by the likes of Marlon Brando, the classic white T-shirt is as dependable as they come. But haven’t you ever wanted more from yours? That could be a very wearable yet refined style from ZEGNA and Massimo Alba or if-you-know-you-know motifs from brands such as Marni or Cherry Los Angeles. Say it with your chest – or don’t.
08. The sunglasses
Finding the perfect sunglasses that suit your face shape is no easy task – but luckily, they come in all forms and guises on the MR PORTER shelves. (And, for direction, see our sunglasses guide here.) Stay under the radar with an all-black pair from TOM FORD, or go for bold with Mr P. x Cubitts styles – this Compton D-frame brown pair takes cues from the iconic style worn by singer-songwriter Buddy Holly.
09. Heirloom jewellery
When we say “heirloom”, me mean something that can be passed down for generations and be treasured, quite literally, for ever. Precious materials and unrivalled time-honoured craftsmanship are certainly deserving of that status – think a luxury watch from IWC Schaffhausen or Hermès Timepieces, for instance. Or fresh takes on jewellery classics, such as David Yurman’s 18-karat gold chain or M.Cohen’s sculptural take on the signet ring.
10. The smart shoes
MR PORTER’s new shoe offering can take you in many directions. Then again, good footwear is typically also incredibly nimble. Loafers are the shoes of the moment, but G.H. Bass beige design and Brunello Cucinelli’s almond-shaped suede pair are set to endure. Boat shoes, such as this signature silhouette by Sebago, are all the rage right now, too. The Derby is traditionally a more leisurely style, but this Lucien pair by Mr P. can be easily dressed up.
