When winter comes around, every year, there’s a lingering feeling of general unpreparedness for sub-zero temperatures. You may even feel that, somehow, you’re even less prepared for them now than you were last year. But we come bearing good news – the advent of cold (read: peak-of-winter cold) days comes with a host of sartorial benefits of its own. We hope, by now, that you’ve gone back to the good old layering game, and, more importantly, that you’ve dusted off your winter boots – that unbeatable combination of sturdy ruggedness, refined style and superior comfort.

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t keep wearing them after winter, too. These boots are, in fact, something of an investment for your long-term wardrobe. Once you’ve identified what kind of style you’re after (our guide can help with that), we’d suggest you have a look at our cheat sheet below. It features everything from John Lobb’s impeccably smart Chelsea boots to more functional styles suited to walking, hiking and everything in-between from the likes of Diemme, Mr P. and more. Best step to it.

01. The exclusive Brunello Cucinelli suede Chelsea boots

Brunello Cucinelli doesn’t just make beautiful things. The Italian luxury brand believes in creating for longevity, designing pieces that you can wear over and over again, without them losing their markers of quality craftsmanship or going out of style. These boots, only at MR PORTER, are a case in point – they even have elasticated inserts for comfort, which have been covered in suede for a more streamlined look.

02. The rock’n’roll John Lobb Chelseas

John Lobb’s Chelsea boots are as classic as they come – but that doesn’t mean that you should reserve them for smarter get-up only. They’d sure look good with a suit, but try styling yours with white denim and an overshirt, or endlessly wearable black jeans and a biker jacket.

03. The everyday Mr P. chukka boots

Whether you’re packing for a countryside weekend or getting ready for a city function, a pair of versatile chukka boots is a true investment. Mr P. has made these brown examples particularly season-appropriate – they’re crafted from waterproof suede and set on durable Vibram Eton EcoLite soles for optimal grip.

04. The refined R.M.Williams Chelsea boots

Australian brand R.M.Williams specialises in footwear that’s both practical and sophisticated. Officially founded by bushman Mr Reginald Murray back in 1932 to cater to those who live and work in the outback, the brand’s shoemaking expertise has now expanded its offering with the kind of boots you won’t need to tramp in the bush to wear. Traditional craftsmanship processes, perfected over generations, expertly sourced high-quality materials and unmatched attention to detail, which these leather Chelsea boots – part of our Consciously Crafted edit – exemplify.

05. The Diemme hiking boots

Italian label Diemme has drawn inspiration from heritage hiking styles to design its Roccia Vet model, which is equally smart and practical. Heavy-duty laces, lightweight rubber-lug soles, built-in ankle support and a sturdy leather construction will lend themselves just as well to your next mountaineering pursuit as they will to your daily commute.

06. The investment Maison Margiela lace-up

A pair of enduring, adaptable lace-ups are a non-negotiable when building your winter wardrobe. Particularly a pair that strikes the perfect balance between smart and casual dress codes, such as Maison Margiela’s. The slightly higher, mid-calf construction will sit nicely beneath relaxed tailored trousers and wide-leg jeans alike. The trademark Tabi detail, meanwhile, splits opinions as well as toes – but we know you’re on the right side of the argument.

07. The Alexander McQueen brogued Chelsea boots

Alexander McQueen has long explored British style – and weaved elements of its enduring legacy into its collections. So Chelsea boots are a mainstay of the brand’s footwear offering. Look closely at the broad square-toe construction of this handsome brown pair and you’ll notice broguing details along the seams, as well as the house’s signature skull logo on the rubber soles.
