THE JOURNAL

Everything you need for a trip to the beach.
Come summer, there are certain rituals which are a rite of passage. For vitamin-D starved Londoners, it’s getting sunburnt outside the local pub while drinking Pimm’s; for New Yorkers, it’s a sojourn to the Hamptons. Right about now, Upper East Siders and Brooklynites start to decamp from their brownstones and lofts in favour of more serene surroundings. At least, that’s the idea in practice; you’re more likely to come back needing an actual holiday, after all that endless partying and sun over-exposure.
The indoor/outdoor lifestyle of the East End of the US calls for a wardrobe that’s stylish, yet nonchalant – a look that’s not always easy to achieve. Being the helpful sorts that we are, we thought we’d make the chore of packing a little bit easier with a few practical suggestions. No need to thank us. Can we come, too?

The summer shirt and shoes
When the mercury is pushing 30ºC, it may be tempting to walk around in your smalls all day, but that isn’t going to go down well at some of Southampton’s smarter establishments. However, it is the Hamptons, so you don’t want to look too starchy. This elegant Canali shirt makes the grade with its airy linen cloth and laid-back cut. It looks just as good worn solo or layered under a jacket, making it the sort of multifaceted number any light packer will appreciate. Pair it with these suede slip-ons to complete the casual look. Being the type of shoe that looks its best worn sockless (or for hygiene’s sake, with socks of the invisible variety), this Tod’s pair are just the ticket for a summer exploit on the coast. And the fact that they’re driving loafers means they’ll serve you well should you find yourself stuck behind the wheel in the notorious Montauk Highway traffic during the weekend exodus.

The characterful beach kit
No matter how conservative some men are with their attire – whether for professional or practical reasons – holidays provide a stellar opportunity to let loose. Sporting a punchy geometric pattern, these Azulejos swim shorts from Brazilian brand Frescobol Carioca will ensure you stand out for all the right reasons on Cooper’s Beach. After a frolic on the shoreline, you’ll want something to help your shake off all that sand and salt water, and this towel from Soho Home is ideal. Its bold stripes, fluffy cotton threads and ample size make it the perfect post-swim cocoon.

The stylish UV deflectors
When musician Mr John Mayer and eyewear designer Mr Tommy O’Gara teamed up to revive a cult eyewear label, we took notice here at MR PORTER. The creative duo behind the reborn Max Pittion – originally one of the greatest eyewear brands of the mid-20th century – are recreating the distinctive charm of the brand using original archive designs. The brand is also reviving genuine vintage production methods, such as using rivets instead of hinges – a technique dating back to the 1940s, which strengthens the frames. These Livingston sunglasses are a charismatic and sturdy choice for flitting from beach to bar. We might be stating the obvious here, but if you’re planning to get bronzed up, you’ll want some decent SPF so you don’t end up looking like a Boston lobster. What could be better than this appropriately named bottle of Hampton Sun SPF30 Lotion? In addition to offering superb protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays, the unique formula contains jojoba oil, vitamin E and walnut oil to keep skin soft and hydrated, while its speedy absorption won’t leave any unpleasant residue behind. Just slap it on and you’re good to go.
Same-day delivery to the Hamptons is available through summer, until 10 September 2017. Simply place an order by 12pm EST for deliveries that evening
