01. Mr Cillian Murphy

The man of the night, Academy Award winner for Best Actor in Oppenheimer, Mr Cillian Murphy (the first Irishman to take home this Oscar) looked very much the part. Dripped out in a custom Versace Atelier tux, his look is all about the details – see the glistening silk touches on his lapel, bow tie and waistband, and the beautiful custom-made 18-karat gold brooch inspired by the atomic bomb (a nod to Mr J Robert Oppenheimer). His sleek patent heeled Chelsea boots also add to the shiny element of the silk. A winner in the books, but also a big winner in the looks.

02. Mr Callum Turner

There’s something about Mr Callum Turner’s simple black suit that warrants a double take. At first glance, it’s just that – a simple black suit – but look closer. The cut of the jacket is slim, but long, with a shorter lapel of a style we haven’t seen in a few decades. The trousers, too, are slightly more belled than the skinny suits and straight legs that have dominated for years. Finished with a hefty shoe and thin tie, it’s a quietly modern look that would be easy to replicate at home.

03. Mr Donald Glover

As we discussed earlier this month, red has been cropping up with increasing regularity in menswear of late. But we have to admit that a full red suit ranks highly on the difficulty scale. The secret, as Mr Donald Glover demonstrates here, in a tomato-hued suit by AMIRI, is in the cut. If this had been made in a slim fit, it would have screamed “off-duty MMA fighter at a casino”. As it is, the high waist, roomy pleated trousers and shawl-collared jacket gesture towards the prom suits of the 1970s, a reference Glover further leans into with a camp-collar shirt and heeled boots. It lends the ensemble a sense of character, as opposed to simply begging for attention.

04. Mr Dominic Sessa

Mr Dominic Sessa wasn’t even born when The Strokes released their debut album Is This It. And yet, based on looks alone, The Holdovers star could slip seamlessly into their early 2000s lineup. Where previous incarnations have seen the actor tap into the scuzzy vintage vibe of post-punk New York that became the band’s trademark style, here he enters his Mr-Julian-Casablancas-joins-Daft-Punk era. His get-up for the ceremony itself erred towards the traditional, if still with a vastly lapelled 1970s bent. However, his afterparty outfit shown here was pure disco rizz – with a sequined tux, gaping shirt, orange-tinted aviators and a synchronised Omega De Ville chronometer.

05. Mr Jeffrey Wright

The American Fiction star Mr Jeffrey Wright may not have been the front-runner for winning the Best Actor gong, but he has been quietly making his mark for Best Tux with his consistently classic looks. The big night was no different, and Wright opted for a minimalist slim-fit tux by Giorgio Armani, accessorised with tinted glasses from Oliver Peoples and a floral brooch, which is fast becoming a big trend on the red carpet. Proving that you don’t need bells and whistles to stand out, Wright’s look is guaranteed to stand the test of time.

06. Mr Ludwig Göransson

Producer and composer Mr Ludwig Göransson showed up to pick up his second Oscar (this time for scoring Oppenheimer) in an all-black ensemble consisting of a ZEGNA satin-trimmed tux and standing-collared shirt. The subtle flare and slightly exaggerated length of the trousers over almond-toed footwear give a retro feel, which is echoed by perhaps the best part of the look – his soft Scandi 1970s hair. A diamond bangle and pink gold Cartier Ballon Bleu top things off. An impressive example of how you can make a folksy aesthetic super, super luxe.

07. Mr Jeff Goldblum

If there’s one person whose get-up you can guarantee will cut through the sea of black suiting we’ve come to expect from the Academy Awards, it’s the silver fox Mr Jeff Goldblum. The 71-year-old actor brought his ever-youthful exuberance to this year’s red carpet, sporting a slim-cut satin-collar tuxedo, black Cuban-heeled boots and his signature Jacques Marie Mage frames. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Goldblum fit without a dash of his euphoric disposition shining through. Cue the statement piece of the outfit: a gold silk shirt. Because when attending the Oscars, it’s fun to dress like one.
