THE JOURNAL

March is a nearly-there month, a limbo month. Winter’s nearly over, but spring won’t be rushed. This state of uncertainty can be felt in the way we dress: tentatively, with just a hint of vernal optimism, but rooted still in the comfort and security of winter coats and layers of cosy knitwear.
With half the world still observing a strict lockdown, occasions to get dressed up remain few and far between. But, as we observed last month, even famous people go for walks. And when they do, they (usually) wear clothes. Here, then, are seven outfits that impressed us over the past few weeks.

Anderson .Paak

Here at MR PORTER, one of our most commonly received requests for style advice is from readers asking us what they should wear to a restaurant. It’s a tricky one to answer. While vanishingly few restaurants still require customers to wear a jacket and tie while on their premises, there is still an expectation, certainly at higher-end establishments, that you make a bit of an effort. But what does “effort” look like in 2021? We’ll answer that by way of an illustrative example. Here’s the ever-dapper Anderson .Paak showing us how it’s done at Nobu Malibu, a restaurant without a formal dress code, but with a serious reputation as a style hotspot. The take-home lesson? Wearing Gucci is never a bad idea.

Mr Timothée Chalamet

As lockdown lifts and we begin to emerge from our year-long hibernation, the great tracksuit debate has reared its ugly head once again. They served us well, but should we stick with them? Or should they be cast back into our wardrobes, never to be seen again? Mr Timothée Chalamet is firmly in the pro-sweatpants camp, based entirely on the evidence of this photograph, in which the talented young actor can be seen enjoying the spring sunshine in New York. He’s avoided any accusations of being under-dressed – a common critique of sweatpants – with a sleek leather jacket worn over a Stella McCartney hoodie, Off-White sneakers and the ultimate 2021 status symbol, a pair of those new Apple headphones.

Mr Liev Schreiber

Mr Liev Schreiber looks like he could absolutely launch a football. The man is a tank. Just look at those hands. Is that even a full-sized ball? We sincerely hope he isn’t taking that poor little dog to play fetch. Anyway, the clothes: this is a stellar outfit, a rhapsody in beige whose elegance belies its own complexity. Notice how even the clear acetate frames of his sunglasses compliment the neutral tones of his shawl-collar cardigan and chinos, while the dark-brown woven leather belt offers a subtle contrast. Here is someone who knows exactly what he’s doing. Look, he even colour-coordinated his dog!

Tyler, the Creator

In many ways, the evolution of Tyler, the Creator’s personal style has mirrored that of his musical career. As he’s matured from iconoclastic alt-rap provocateur towards a softer, more melodious sound, the contents of his wardrobe have followed a similar trajectory: out with the Supreme tees and five-panel caps, and in with… this? It’s a look we can only describe as grandad below the waist, grandma above it, and Sherlock Holmes on top – and we mean it as a sincere compliment to Tyler when we say that we cannot think of a single other person who could pull this off.

Mr Donovan Mitchell

Here’s a statement worthy of its own thinkpiece: the NBA is the current global epicentre of men’s style. Specifically, it’s the home of what the kids call “drip”, that balls-to-the-wall, everything-turned-up-to-11 take on menswear. But while the power dressers get the headlines, others play a more subtle game. Case in point: here’s Mr Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz, showing up for a game against the Boston Celtics. The sneakers and bag show off his designer credentials, but it’s that sweater – a remake of one famously worn by Princess Diana – that really stands out. One for the style nerds (and fans of The Crown).

Mr Matthew Hitt

Here’s a lesson in indie-rocker style from Mr Matthew Hitt, who is, you guessed it, the lead singer of an indie rock band called Drowners. All elements are present and correct, from the scuffed leather jacket and Ray-Bans to the drainpipe jeans and vintage band tee (he with Oasis). What really gives this outfit a point of difference, though, is the satisfyingly clompy shoes he’s chosen to wear on his feet. You wouldn’t think a preppy classic like a deck shoe would work in this context, but we’re glad to discover, thanks to Hitt, that it does.

Mr Justin Bieber

A new album means Mr Justin Bieber is back on his press game, which means plenty of media appearances and – good news for us style hacks – plenty of lewks to deconstruct and discuss. We wrote in The Journal recently about a recent trip he made to Paris with his wife, Ms Hailey Bieber, during which he displayed a more mature side to his personal style, and it was on show again this month at rehearsals for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. There are elements here of the “scumbro” Biebs of old – scuffed-up Vans skate shoes, beanie hat – but there are also smartly tailored trousers and a cosy-looking, peach-hued cardigan.
