THE JOURNAL
Of our five senses, scent is by far the most evocative. Smells have the power to trigger an array of emotional reactions, ranging from lust to disgust. Some can quicken our pulse, while others can bring us to a state of deep relaxation. And, because the signals received by our olfactory receptors are processed in the amygdala, the brain’s memory centre, certain aromas are able to bring forth lucid recollections of the past, too.
Little wonder that human attraction is rooted primarily in scent. It’s possible to look past how a person looks and even how their voice sounds, but we simply cannot do the same for how they smell. Think of the revulsion you might feel sitting next to someone doused in cheap, heady perfume. Now imagine the very different experience of being close to someone who smells great.
One man doing more than most to ensure that you fall into the latter camp is Mr Tom Ford, whose eponymous fragrance line includes modern, masculine scents such as the rich, woody Fougère Platine, the crisp and zesty Mandarino Di Amalfi, and, of course, F***ing Fabulous. But which should you choose, and how and when should you wear it? You could do worse than to ask the man himself. Watch the video, above, to find out what he has to say about the matter.
