The best thing about a casual shirt is exactly that. It’s informal and laid-back, so you can have a bit of fun with it. It invites experimentation with colours, patterns, textures and layering. And if there was ever a time to try out something new or refresh your rotation, the start of summer (read: now) is it. You may be after something that completes an already existing fit, a piece to layer over a tank top or a bold design to add a little pizzazz to any look. To help you get started – and kick off the sunny season in true MR PORTER style – we’ve hand-picked our favourite shirts from the likes of LOEWE, BODE, Our Legacy and more, that’ll make the perfect suitcase heroes. Plus, equally brilliant companions for warmer days in the city.

01. The Our Legacy floral style
We know what you’re thinking – a floral shirt for spring isn’t exactly groundbreaking. But the breezy open weave and vintage-inspired pattern of this Our Legacy shirt is one to watch. Every little detail is well-thought-out, from the lustrous shell buttons to the relaxed, boxy fit and slightly dropped shoulder seams.

02. The BODE’s bucolic shirt
BODE’s meticulously crafted shirts are designed with a particular reverence for the past, with the kind of carefree spirit that’s typical of the sunny season. This shirt is no exception. Cut in a relaxed from micro-checked cotton, it’s embroidered with baby lamb on the asymmetric pockets, and intended to be worn with the matching shorts. See you at the barn.

03. The Séfr tactile camp-collar
When it comes to introducing different textures into your wardrobe, there’s no harm in not going full gas. We’d recommend starting from something neutrally hued and versatile, such as this Séfr shirt. The tufted stripes make it anything but boring – a perfect pairing for camel and beige chinos and tailored trousers.

04. The Story Mfg. checked design
Story Mfg.’s shirt is one of our seasonal favourites for a few reasons. For one, it’s part of our Consciously Crafted edit – a selection of pieces created with care and purpose, designed to help you make more conscious and considered decisions about your wardrobe. The label uses lower-impact materials, such as organic cotton, and hand-dyes each item using natural pigments, so no two items are ever the same. For another, it’s exclusive to MR PORTER, which means you won’t find it anywhere else. Need we say more?

05. The LOEWE playful staple
LOEWE’s Paula’s Ibiza collection, of which this shirt is part, is inspired by the iconic Balearic boutique, combining the best of the island’s carefree spirit and the Spanish house’s superior craftsmanship and eye for detail. Printed with a mash-up of striped, monogrammed and colour-block sections, it’s designed with a convertible collar, meaning you can wear it in lieu of a button-up in smarter settings.

06. The De Bonne Facture embroidered must-have
If you’re looking for something with a bit more oomph than the classic floral shirt, consider De Bonne Facture’s design. It’s embroidered with small flowering mimosa branches, which gives it a characterful, crafty feel. The lightweight cotton-voile construction is perfect for warmer climates.

07. The artful Valentino Garavani shirt
Valentino Garavani’s shirt is the kind of staple that can easily be dressed up, if the occasion requires it. It’s tailored from silk-twill that has a subtle lustre to it and printed with an abstract poppy motif, which reflects the exploration of the gentler sides of masculinity that acts as a fil rouge throughout the brand’s SS24 lineup.
