THE JOURNAL
How do you wear a scarf? You just drape it over your neck, right? Wrong. And if you’ve been doing it that way, you’ve been doing it wrong. Just kidding. It’s fine, but there are more stylish ways to, er, style that thing that’s meant to keep your neck warm. Here are three ways to wear a scarf this season.
01. The babushka
Stay with us here. This is a look for the man who knows himself and his style and feels confident enough to try something fairly advanced. It’s also a look for the man who is caught outside in sub-zero temps but has forgotten his hat at home. Either way, grab your fluffiest scarf – like this mohair-blend version by LOEWE – and start by draping it over the top of your noggin, making sure one end is longer than the other. Throw that long end around your neck and bring it round the front to tuck into your leather jacket (also by LOEWE). Ta da, you are warm and you look like a street-style image from New York Fashion Week.
02. A chic knot
If you’re a lover of the Italian style, this method is for you. It works best with scarves that have weight but aren’t too bulky, like this Prince of Wales checked cashmere piece by TOM FORD. Looped around the neck and then tied snugly in the front, this method almost has a necktie quality to it – it’s elegant and intentional, perfect as an accoutrement to laid-back tailoring (or buttoned up tailoring). We’ve styled it here with a puffer from Herno Laminar just to demonstrate how well it works with casual options, but this style would look just as lovely with an overcoat or even just with a suit or blazer.
03. The big-boy scarf
Got yourself a hefty, weighty, massive scarf? And preferably from the plaid kings at Burberry. You may be thinking: this thing doesn’t wrap, it doesn’t tie – it’s huge, what do I do? With an oversized scarf, we go back to basics and simply toss one end over the shoulder so that your neck is protected, but not braced. Keep the rest of your outwear on the slimmer side so that you’re not bulking out like the Incredible Hulk. For warmth, turn to layers. We did an Our Legacy denim jacket beneath a mfpen recycled-wool coat which, if we may say so, looks stylish, elegant and toasty for the New Year.
