Five Candles To Add A Little Luxury To Your Life
Words by Ms Molly Isabella Smith
23 February 2021

Since we no longer rely on them for practical purposes, candles are one of those things that fall into the “luxury” category – and we mean that in the literal sense of the word. They’re an indulgence: something to light when we need to calm our thoughts, unwind or, occasionally, set a romantic mood. No one needs a candle, which is, paradoxically, one of the reasons they also make a first-rate gift. Here are five of the best at MR PORTER right now.

01.
The big hitter
If you like your candles to pack a sensory punch, then Byredo’s Apocalyptic candle is one for you. Don’t let its gothic vessel and cynical moniker fool you – it’s packed with heavy-hitting scents, such as fruity black raspberry, iron and smokey birch, making it as idiosyncratic a candle as they come.

02.
The case for acacia
Dedicated brunch-goers shouldn’t rejoice just yet: Diptyque’s Mimosa candle isn’t a replica of the champagne and orange juice cocktail (and, it goes without saying, please don’t put it anywhere near your mouth to check). Instead, it is a facsimile of the delicate honey-coloured flowers that grow on the Tanneron hills in Southern France. And therefore altogether more sophisticated, in our humble opinion (if a lot less tasty).

03.
The arrival of summer
If you’re still not able to satiate your wanderlust at the moment, try the next best thing: La Montaña’s First Light candle. The debut offering from the London-based, Spanish-inspired brand and its signature scent, it’s designed to recall the aroma of a long summer’s holiday with herby fennel, rosemary, and mountain pepper.

04.
The OG scent
Any candle buff will be familiar with Cire Trudon: the French outfit has been crafting its wares since the time of King Louis XIV. The Cire scent is designed to embody the manufacture’s entire ethos, making it an ideal introduction to the brand. It’s built on a base of beeswax absolute inspired by the brand’s motto: “Deo regique laborant” or “they (the bees) work for God and the King”.

05.
The one to keep an eye on
Sure, candles do a great job of setting the mood, but did you know that they can also ward off evil spirits? Well, some can. Allow us to explain. L’Objet’s Lito candle is encased in a ceramic vessel topped with an evil eye – a symbol used since ancient times to banish bad vibes. And, if that doesn’t do the trick, the earthy green vetiver scent should get it done.
