THE JOURNAL

From Babylonian astrology to the Chinese zodiac, it has long been believed that celestial bodies are related to the activities of decidedly terrestrial humans. What’s more, they can offer scarily accurate insights into what type of person you are. Some people look to the stars to guide their romantic lives, some use them for career advice; others don’t believe in astrology at all, while some people won’t start their day until they’ve read their horoscope. (After all, it’s worth knowing if Mercury is in retrograde before you place that first coffee order.)
Regardless of which camp you fall into, most of us are aware of our star signs and the characteristics ascribed to them: Virgos are perfectionists; Leos are dominant; Geminis are indecisive, and so on. But have you ever considered what influence the planets and the sun have on your wardrobe? Well, you no longer have to. We have put on our (very fetching) clairvoyant hats and looked to the stars to divine how you should dress according to your zodiac sign. For style advice from the heavens above, see below.
(21 March-20 April)
01. Aries
People may call you attention-seeking, but you call it bold. They say you’re competitive, but you know you’re just leading by example. That’s why you’re at the forefront of the latest trends while waiting for everyone else to catch up. Show off your unapologetic style in drawstring trousers from 99%IS-, an AMIRI tie-dye bomber jacket and, of course, a bright tee from the aptly named Aries.
(21 April-20 May)
02. Taurus
You like nice things. Really, really nice things. Your standards are high and you expect the finest quality in your clothes, too. Understated items that match your laid-back attitude and timeless pieces you’ll own forever are what you favour. Fill your wardrobe with pieces that exude stealth luxury, such as Loro Piana cashmere sweaters, Brunello Cucinelli sweatpants and a classic timepiece from Vacheron Constantin.
(21 May-21 June)
03. Gemini
You’re a busy person and so are your clothes. After all, your look has to work all day, from the office, to drinks and dinner, to that show you just have to see. For a dependable and flexible wardrobe, choose comfortable drawstring trousers by Folk, Larry sneakers from Mr P. and a jacket that pulls double duty such as this reversible Prada bomber.
(22 June-22 July)
04. Cancer
Comfortable is your comfort zone, literally – you’d wear your pyjamas all day if you could. You also don’t mind going down memory lane with pieces that evoke a certain time and place. Stay cosy with this velour sweatshirt from Fendi, which features the iconic logo that was first penned by Mr Karl Lagerfeld in the 1960s. Celebrate the sustained revival of tie-dye with a pair of cashmere socks by The Elder Statesman. And, for the ultimate in comfort, wrap yourself up in a cotton-terry robe from Cleverly Laundry.
(23 July-22 August)
05. Leo
You didn’t choose the smug life; the smug life chose you. Someone has to show everyone else how it’s done, and it might as well be you. That’s why you fill your wardrobe with bold and playful pieces others wish they could pull off, including the entire Balenciaga and Vetements collections, leopard-print sweaters from Dries Van Noten and a sneaker collection to trouble the current Guinness World Records holder.
(23 August-21 September)
06. Virgo
If our clothes are a reflection of our inner selves, then it’s only right that yours are impeccable. As celebrated designer and fellow Virgo Mr Tom Ford says, “dressing well is a form of good manners”. That’s why only precisely tailored suits – by TOM FORD, of course – and the shiniest leather Derby shoes from SAINT LAURENT will do. The details are also important: Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato wallet, practical frames from Mr Leight and a pair of Kingsman cufflinks are the perfect finishing touches.
(22 September-22 October)
07. Libra
Life is all about balance for you and it reflects in your wardrobe, too, which you approach in a measured and considered way. Symmetrical and perfectly proportioned pieces that are aesthetically designed are your calling card. Go smart yet striking in Paul Smith’s pink jacket and matching trousers or keep it casual in this floral shirt and shorts set from Dries Van Noten.
(23 October-22 November)
08. Scorpio
You wear what you want, when you want and how you want. You’re happy to venture where nobody else will and your clothes need to be ready for anything – think functional workwear such as Carhartt WIP’s technical jacket, L.E.J’s army-green trousers with knee patches, sturdy Yuketen boots and, of course, a water-resistant backpack by Sealand Gear.
(23 November-21 December)
09. Sagittarius
Style rules are for everyone else and don’t apply to you. You blaze your own trail and dare anyone to tell you you’re wrong. You’d wear Maison Margiela Tabi shoes just to see how people would react. They may think you’re pretentious; you think they just don’t get it. Make a statement in this Rick Owens vinyl raincoat or a loud shirt from Wacko Maria.
(22 December-20 January)
10. Capricorn
Clothes? Those things we have to wear so we don’t get arrested for indecent exposure when we leave the house? Sure, you don’t mind them. Your style is characterised by down-to-earth, classic pieces that get the job done. You think black is a primary colour and you wear beige when you’re feeling daring. Classic Oxford shirts, neutral blazers from Saman Amel and slip-on Vans are all up your street.
(21 January-19 February)
11. Aquarius
You were recycling your outfits long before Mr Joaquin Phoenix wore the same suit on every red carpet during awards season. You wear your values on your sleeves and don’t mind standing out in a crowd. Choose pieces from brands with sustainability at their core, such as this peace-sign T-shirt from Story Mfg., a pair of faux-leather sneakers by Veja, organic denim from Nudie Jeans and palm oil-free hair products courtesy of Doers of London.
(20 February-20 March)
12. Pisces
Known for being imaginative and intuitive, you approach your wardrobe with the flair of an artist, mixing colours and patterns in a creative way. This floral suit from Alexander McQueen is perfectly suited to your love of nature while this SAINT LAURENT silk shirt reflects your free-spirited, romantic side.
