THE JOURNAL

Retro sportswear has seen a revival. And while you may have spotted remakes of football kits and blokecore kicks cropping up everywhere from runways to street style – it is the summer of the Euros, after all – the trend extends far beyond the pitch. Think court shorts with a vintage, worn-in feel, collegiate-inspired rugby shirts and retro track jackets. But sneakers are, by far, the easiest way to incorporate it in your wardrobe. Here are our favourite pairs from the likes of adidas Originals and Wales Bonner, LOEWE, Acne Studios and more – the ball is in your court.
01. The Nike Air Pegasus 2K5

The Pegasus has been one of the cornerstones of Nike’s running lineup since the first iteration was launched in the early 1980s. In that time, it has seen numerous makeovers – the current model makes it 41. This reissue of the 2005 edition comes in an Old Royal colourway. The palette of teal, coconut milk and soft yellow is perfect for summer, lightening up any outfit you’ll throw them on with.
02. The adidas Originals x Wales Bonner SL76

The collaboration between adidas Originals and London-based designer Ms Grace Wales Bonner has been all the rage over the past couple of seasons, with the reissued Sambas being one of the best-sellers from the capsule. But the SL76 is also worth a look – it maintains the signature contrast stitching and branding, but features updated breathable mesh uppers, which is perfect when the weather heats up.
03. The New Balance 993

Trends come and go. And while the dad shoe craze has been around almost as long as your old man, the popularity of New Balance’s 993, which has been a prominent fixture over recent seasons, shows no signs of slowing down. This leafy green style borrows elements from two previous 99X models, such as the ABZORB midsole cushioning and streamlined silhouette.
04. The Acne Studios Bars Low

Acne Studios’ Bars Low sneakers are inspired by futsal styles, though they look best away from the hardcourt. Contrasting panels of polished leather and smooth suede sit atop exaggerated gum rubber outsoles, which will keep you comfortable for city breaks and commutes alike.
05. The TOM FORD Jackson

If you’re looking for a sneaker that goes the distance (in every way), look no further than TOM FORD’s Jackson. It is inspired by vintage runner styles, with mesh, rubber and canvas panels and the brand’s recognisable “T” emblem.
06. The LOEWE Flow Runner

Similarly to the Jackson, LOEWE’s Flow Runner sneaker takes its design cues from retro athletic styles. However, the vintage inspiration is enhanced by brushed suede panels, which will make them look like a pair you’ve owned for years. The serrated rubber soles that extend from the toe caps to the leather heel tabs.
07. The Maison Margiela Replica

Maison Margiela’s Replica sneaker is inspired by Austrian sports shoes from the 1970s. But the silhouette’s details and colourways are continuously updated in line with seasonal inspirations. The light-grey upper on this suede model makes a welcome alternative to classic white styles.
