THE JOURNAL

This week on MR PORTER we’re taking a trip – metaphorical, not physical – to the Pacific coast to celebrate the boundary-pushing, agenda-setting menswear designers currently making waves in Los Angeles, Tokyo and beyond. Working hand-in-hand with our buying team, they’ve served up a heady cocktail of Harajuku streetwear, vintage American workwear, SoCal surf style and much more, featuring dip-dyed cashmere, embroidered denim, patched-up varsity jackets, handcrafted jewellery… Oh, and did we mention shoes?
There is a wealth of shoemaking talent on show here, from Rhude’s luxurious interpretations of old-school basketball sneakers to Yuketen and KAPITAL’s contemporary takes on traditional North American sandals. Here are just five of our favourites.
01.
The Rhude colour-block sneakers

One of the LA menswear scene’s breakout names, Rhude is known for taking American streetwear staples and adding a luxurious finish. Take these Rhecess sneakers, which are made in Italy from butter-soft leather and hand-distressed for a ready-made worn-in look. And while the bold contrasting leather stripes and Rhude logo across the back make for a high-impact sneaker, there’s subtlety here too: notice how the laces loop neatly around the heels.
02.
The visvim leopard-print low-tops

Visvim’s Skagway might look like a simple update to the classic Chuck Taylor-style basketball sneaker from afar, but as tends to be the case with Mr Hiroki Nakamura’s designs, the devil is in the detail. Take note of the lightning bolts running the length of the exaggerated platform sole, which are painted individually by hand, just one of the time-intensive steps involved in visvim’s uncompromising production process.
03.
The KAPITAL fringed clog

It may be based in Japan but KAPITAL’s design cues are predominantly North American, as shown by these spectacular fringed leather sandals. The brand refers to this shoe as Pueblo sabot, “sabot” being a traditional French clog – and, incidentally, the root of the word “sabotage” – but it’s the Native American influences that really shine through here.
04.
The woven Yuketen sandals

Yuketen founder Mr Yuki Matsuda collaborates with North American crafting communities to design and create his highly sought-after line of moccasins, huarache sandals and other traditional shoes. This Cruz sandal takes the traditional Mexican woven-leather huarache design and sets it atop a Vibram® sole for a little extra height and stability.
05.
The Suicoke patchwork slides

Suicoke has been blowing us away this season; if you’re in the market for a pair of performance sandals then the Japanese brand’s entire line-up is worth a look. If you’re looking for our top recommendation, though, you can’t go wrong with these KAW-VS sandals. The straps are made from a patchwork of denim and suede inspired by the traditional Japanese embroidery style of sashiko. Oh, and did we mention that they’re exclusive to MR PORTER?
