Five winter-holiday recommendations from the MR PORTER Style Council .
Now that we have survived January and all its self-flagellatory trappings, we can begin to enjoy ourselves. Learn to live a little. But how can we do so in February, when the weather is miserable and we’re still very much in hibernation mode? The solution, on the surface, is simple. Jump on a plane and head somewhere hot. There’s a bit more to it, however, than merely thinking “anywhere but the UK”. You must pick your destination wisely. So, in search of guaranteed sun (and the utmost luxury, of course), we consulted our Style Council address book for five of the best places to jet off to this February. We wish we were there already.

It’s getting on for late summer in New Zealand, and February and March are the best times to visit for a bit of sun. Located close to the impossibly picturesque Huka Falls in Taupo, Huka Lodge opens out onto manicured lawns on the banks of the Waikato River. The lodge’s rustic yet polished ambience and its proximity to the forest and water make it a great spot for a wholesome country getaway that could include fly fishing, kayaking and horse riding. Or, if staying in is more your thing, the suites will provide ample comfort.

With a year-round warm climate, Morocco is a safe bet if you’re looking for some winter sun. At this time of year, you can expect a pleasantly warm 20°C. The obvious destination might be Marrakech, with its market shopping and riad staying. But we’ve all seen the Instagram photos. Why not do something different? This year we’re heading for the Atlas Mountains, and we’re doing it in style by staying at Kasbah Bab Ourika. We’d spend a few sentences explaining why, but we suggest you click on the link and look at the pictures. We couldn’t possibly do it justice.

There are more stressful places to rest and repair this February than Miami. An understatement, of course, especially if you head to The Standard. What makes it stand out among all the hotels you could book? Well, you could head to the beachfront, which, come to think of it, can be a bit stressful, or the popular Wynwood area. But why not stay on an island? The Standard isn’t just positioned in one of the most relaxing places in Miami, it also has a spa. And with two mentions from our globe-trotting Style Council, it comes highly recommended. What are you waiting for?

Way above the dusty streets of Nizwa, Oman, the fortress-like Alila Jabal Akhdar resort perches 2,000m above sea level like a palace in the sky, and provides something of an oasis from the gasping heat of the desert below. Its sanctuary-like trappings continue with views of the rugged mountains, an open-air restaurant and a spa that incorporates a range of ancient Asian treatments, including shirodhara and warm-stone massages. Don’t miss the terrace full of roses, which are used to make Omani rose water.

Privacy and seclusion are the heart of Como Maalifushi. The resort sits on its own coral atoll, with individual terraces looking out over the water. Its clean, minimal design was masterminded by Japanese architect Mr Koichiro Ikebuchi, who designed the simple space with respect to nature and Maldivian culture, which means the over-water villas are built with pine and have thatched roofs. And with white-sand beaches, succulently fresh seafood and a spiritual wellbeing spa, you can forget February. You can check us in for the rest of the year.
