THE JOURNAL
A new year can be a tempting time to plan an entire overhaul of your home. But, if a full-scale renovation isn’t on the cards, there are ways to rejuvenate a space and tap into trends without the need to tear down walls. Here are three trends we’re taking note of for interiors inspiration in 2025.
01. Cosy styling
“It’s a harsh world out there, and as we inhabit an increasingly intangible digital universe, we seek refuge when we go indoors,” says cutting-edge designer Tom Dixon. “We want our furniture to provide comfort, tactility, weight and softness.”
While comfort might not be a word often heard in interior trends, it certainly lends itself to a season when hunkering down and cosying up is the only plan inked into the fresh pages of our diaries. An easy way to achieve this is by investing in enveloping accessories that bring some warmth and informality to even the slickest of spaces – a bedroom instantly looks more lived-in, for instance, with a cashmere throw folded over the end of the bed, while an armchair’s appeal is uplifted by a single, sink-into cushion. An ambience-creating candle also goes a long way for adding atmosphere.
Take inspiration from: Soho Home is well versed in the art of invitingly cocooning interiors – just look to its collection of velvet cushions and knitted blankets. For beautifully crafted cashmere perfect for draping and plumping, heritage brands such as Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana do it best.
02. Earth tones
Popular for 2025 are warm and sophisticated earthy shades and natural materials, ideal for elevating a space by evoking a connection to the great outdoors – from the currently slightly more appealing indoors. In fact, Pantone’s Colour of the Year is mocha mousse, which is described as “a warming, brown hue imbued with richness… sophisticated, earthy elegance”.
Combining a mix of textures and tones gives a layered effect, creating extra character and a refined rustic charm. Consider handcrafted oak and walnut furnishings, terracotta tiling, a grounding palette of neutrals, browns and greens, and a smattering of natural stones like marble.
Take inspiration from: Interior-design firm Buchanan Studio has a penchant for beautifully eclectic, contemporary interiors, often bringing bucolic warmth to urban living with rich-hued woods and earth shades throughout their irreverent spaces. (The husband-and-wife design duo’s London kitchen garden is a sight to behold.) For accessories that tap into the trend, consider The Conran Shop’s walnut tableware, oak pieces and Soho Home’s weighty marble trays.
03. Curved lines
Far from a new trend, but the desire for curves in our interiors is only getting stronger in 2025, softening straight edges and bringing amped-up allure and intrigue – whether it’s a supersized sofa, a wavy-framed mirror or voluptuous decorative pieces. The beauty of the trend is that it can work in most spaces and with most over-arching design principles. If your base lines are sharp and angular, try offsetting them with rounded accessories for major impact.
Take inspiration from: Soho Home knows how curved profiles dial up both the cool and comfort credentials in furnishings – from circular tables to corner sofas, scalloped cushions to tub chairs. Also look to Tom Dixon’s orb-shaped, sculptural lamps and vases for art-gallery-worthy pieces that are unique and conversation-starting.
