Benedict Cumberbatch in The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar (2023)
A few years ago, our sartorial boundaries between the inner and outer world were blurred forever by lockdown and loungewear became the new streetwear. In spring 2021, Travis Scott wore a dressing gown and slippers on the front cover of L’Officiel Hommes, signalling loungewear’s new style status. And a few years on, we continue to bring a comfort-first philosophy to our clothing. Discover our edit of the loungewear so luxe, you’ll actually want to show off outside, too.
01. The stay-at-home sweats
Whether an unforeseen plan cancellation by another party or your own legitimate excuse to postpone, there’s nothing more freeing than when you get a day indoors officially signed off. As long as you’re wearing this Les Tien dyed cotton-jersey sweatshirt and pants combination, you have an official licence to stay right where you are. You’re not completely off the hook, though. With their washed-out blue hue, these look cool and effortless (they’re made in a workshop in LA, naturally), and if you pair them with Brunello Cucinelli’s perfectly cosy socks, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t head out to show them off while walking the dog or grabbing a drink after all.
02. The cosy fleece
A decade or so ago, to justify owning a fleece, you needed a flask of coffee, crampons and a can-do enthusiasm that belied your lack of hiking experience. Today, all you need is a penchant for Gorpcore and a local park. DIME’s coverstitch logo-appliqued fleece jacket, inspired by skatewear, is a cool and versatile choice. Don’t stop there, mind – pair it with Fear of God’s jersey sweatpants and TOM FORD’s classic Henley for optimum comfort and style. If you’re only venturing as far as the sofa, Mr P.’s slippers are a sophisticated choice to luxuriate in.
03. The sumptuous cashmere crew neck
So, what should you wear on those in-between days over the festive period, when you’re a bit partied out but still want to look somewhat put together? Cashmere, of course. PIACENZA 1733, a family business founded almost 300 years ago, is one of the oldest knitwear manufacturers around. It combines artisanal techniques with the world’s finest fabrics, so you’ll never want to take its beige crew neck off. Barena’s Bativoga trousers, meanwhile, will strike the perfect balance between elevated and relaxed – the straight-leg cut ensures you look smart while the elastic waistband means you can go all in on yuletide leftovers (just be mindful of dark sauces or red wine).
04. The elevated pyjamas
Whatever you’re doing at this time of year, whether sleeping, eating, or venturing outside, you can feasibly do it in pyjamas – though you might need an overcoat if you’re leaving the house. And if you’re going to be spending all of your time in pyjamas, then why not make them the most wonderful pyjamas in the world? Dolce&Gabbana’s camp-collar, logo-embroidered, silk-twill shirt is good enough for a night out, never mind a night in bed. And with the trousers to match, and a thick pair of cashmere Loro Piana socks, you’re good to go (or stay right where you are).
05. The wear-anywhere sportswear
Gone are the days when the festive period required a sequence of outfits – something smart for dinner, something more formal for the in-laws, etc. Given the style preferences of now, and the fact we’re not 11 years old anymore, today we can take a more laissez-faire approach and look fantastic while we do it. Cherry Los Angeles is saying: dress for the energy levels you want, not the energy levels you have. SAINT Mxxxxxx is reminding us that 1990s sportwear silhouettes are back with a nostalgic bang. And Acne Studios is telling us to stride confidently into 2025 in slick suede-trimmed leather sneakers you’ll wear on repeat all year.
