What To Wear For The Fourth Of July 2017

Celebrate American Independence Day in style with MR PORTER.

Independence Day already? Feels more like Groundhog Day. Gosh, these things roll around so quickly, don’t they? In any case, whether you plan to spend the big day watching fireworks on a rooftop, floating around on a party-filled boat, or merely in a friend’s garden, eating slightly charred sausages, the age-old question persists: how do you throw together a reasonable outfit in the colours red, white and blue without looking too much like Uncle Sam? Scroll down for our timely recommendations for this year.

Red can be a bit of a tricky colour. Particularly if its wearer has spent that little bit too much time in the sun. So there are two tips here. 1. Slather yourself meticulously in something from MR PORTER’s enviable range of suncare products. 2. Opt for an item of clothing in a slightly softer red, such as this tomato-red (as opposed to scarlet) cotton jacket from British brand Folk. Worn over a blue and white striped T-shirt, it will not only give you a complete collection of stars-and-stripes colours, but look suitably nautical, should you find yourself near any large bodies of water.

Now, this part isn’t rocket science. It’s July. It’s hot. Which means you’ll need a decent pair of shorts. Stay on the blue kick with this navy pair from Japanese brand Neighborhood. They’re rendered in a lightweight cotton linen, which means they’re a perfect foil to the heat, and, handily, have an elasticated waistband (with an adjustable belt), which gives you a bit more flexibility should you overdo it at the barbecue. For footwear, you want something casual and easy – the Primeknit variation of Adidas Originals’ classic Stan Smiths excel on this front, being a slightly lighter and more breathable version of their leather counterparts.

SOMETHING EXTRA

No, these round-framed sunglasses from Cutler And Gross aren’t red, white or blue, but patriotism has its limits. Besides, with their tortoiseshell frames and Italian construction, they’ll add a vintage, slightly more timeless feel to your stars-and-stripes look. Develop this more muted palette a little further with your choice of wristwear – a sporty watch with an army-green strap from Timex should do the trick (and make sure you’re aware when it’s finally home time, ie 5 July).
