THE JOURNAL

The 71st Creative Arts Emmy Awards, in recognition of technical achievement, took place at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown LA over the weekend. The Emmys are the US television industry’s top prize-giving show, and it’s an event with a distinct personality. In this streaming era people tend to talk more about TV box sets than they do about movies, while actors and directors flit freely from one medium to another. To give you an idea just how far streaming services have come, Netflix’s Roma won three Oscars this year. TV’s star presence was on display over the Emmys’ two nights, in the form of the people who make, and feature in the big shows.
We kept our eyes on the red carpet in order to bring you a round-up of what the best-dressed men were wearing, and were rewarded with a broad range of outfits that run from standard issue dark suits to more exuberant outfits (see the five stars of Queer Eye, below). The evening’s proceedings left us with two burning questions: why have so few guys in the TV industry heard that tailoring silhouettes are changing, and how was it that the only prize won by HBO’s outstanding series Succession was for title music? (Although it still has a chance to make up for this at the main event, the Primetime Emmys themselves, next week.)
Mr Neil Patrick Harris

The child star of 1980s medical drama Doogie Howser, MD, is now better known as Count Olaf from Netflix’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events. The Count Olaf character has a certain antique style, thanks to his taste in tattered silk robes and fur-trimmed collars, but on the red carpet Mr Harris went for a more contemporary look. This took the form of a slim tuxedo jacket with peak lapels, a black bow tie, shirt studs instead of buttons, slim black trousers and patent leather shoes. The pink jacket, pocket flaps and Derby shoes represent alternatives to the classic dinner jacket outfit, but look fresh in this context. It’s amazing how sober the dusty-pink jacket looks thanks to the fabric’s matte finish.

Queer Eye’s fabulous five were collectively the talk of the night, both for the awards they won and the clothes they wore. Mr Van Ness’ short black dress, high-heels and clutch bag attracted the most attention and while we’re unqualified to comment on the clothes, his grooming was undoubtedly impactful. Mr Berk was the most low-key of the five, in his relaxed-looking dinner jacket, while Mr France’s Varun Bahl-designed outfit paid tribute to his Pakistani heritage, (according to his Instagram post). Mr Porowski was in the most classic outfit, in the form of a well-cut shawl-collared dinner jacket worn with patent loafers, while Mr Brown must have been risking heat-stroke in his military-inspired, fur trimmed, double-breasted Versace overcoat.
Mr Olivier Rousteing

The French Balmain designer is almost as much of a celebrity as his clients, and he attended the Emmys to represent Homecoming, the Netflix film of Beyoncé’s legendary 2018 Coachella performances, for which Mr Rousteing created the outfits. Sadly, the film didn’t receive any awards, and, sadder yet, Mr Kanye West wasn’t there to make representations on Beyoncé’s behalf (as he famously did at 2009’s VMAs). Like the film, Mr Rousteing’s outfit deserves some recognition. The suit, which is in a delicate pale yellow, is like an unstructured zoot suit, with a long, ultra-drapey jacket with soft shoulders and peak lapels. The low-crotch trousers are slim, but comfortable looking, while the casual white sneakers are well judged. In a just world Mr Rousteing’s outfit will move the needle on red-carpet dressing.
Mr Rufus Sewell

The British actor was nominated for the Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series for his turn as tortured painter Declan Howell in the show The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. His outfit, like his acting, deserves an award as Mr Sewell took a very British approach and went completely classic in a single-breasted, peak-lapel dinner jacket, which he wore with a horse-shoe-shaped waistcoat, a black bow tie and patent leather Oxford shoes. The perfectly judged length of his shirt sleeves, which correctly protruded from his jacket, were emblematic of his exemplary tailoring – we particularly liked the jacket’s subtly extended shoulders, given how many Emmys attendees looked a little constrained by their super-slim suits. In these casual days, Mr Sewell reminds us of the power of a well-cut dinner jacket.
Mr Alberto Mielgo

This Spanish animator and director won an award for “The Witness”, an episode of the Netflix series Love, Death & Robots. Amid a sea of showbiz attendees, his slightly off-kilter outfit was a breath of fresh air. At an award ceremony designed to celebrate a creative industry, Mr Mielgo was one of few men to look convincingly creative. We admire the tousled, greying hair, the statement tortoiseshell glasses with their even more statement neck string, the slightly misshapen black suit, with its too-long sleeves and too-short jacket, and the short trousers worn on the hips with bare ankles and chunky black shoes. It’s a look that sends a strong signal, which is that Mr Mielgo is his own man, as well as a rising star.
